Children experience changes throughout their lives, both big and small. Starting the school year with a new teacher and friends can bring a variety of big emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, anticipation, and excitement. Everyone reacts to change in their own way. One child might breeze into your classroom on the first day ready to go, while others might need weeks to adapt. Some children might be withdrawn, clingy, afraid, irritable or cry when transitioning from home to school.
It helps to acknowledge and label their feelings, and to teach some soothing strategies like deep breathing to calm down and relieve stress. Building a structured routine into their day will help create predictability, so students can learn what to expect. When the schedule is presented visually with pictures and referred to throughout the day, students will understand what the day will look like as they adapt to this big change in their lives. When children are given a warning before a transition, the change does not take them off guard. This can be done with things like a visual timer, a countdown, or a clean-up song.
This week, the Puppet Pals work through a variety of feelings about making the change from summer to school. They learn some strategies to help them adapt to these changes. As your students watch the videos, they might relate to the puppets and learn some ways to deal with their own feelings associated with the beginning of school.
