You have to visit a Spanish traditional food market next time you’re in Spain. Noisy, busy, full of wonderful smells and overflowing with people - they’re a feast for all the sense. I love my local market (the Mercado de Antón Martín - featured in this video). Ham, cheese, wine, olive oil, saffron, paprika, bread, meat, fruit and vegetables - these places are gastronomic wonderlands. But they’re also fabulous cultural places - every Spanish market has at least a few bars, and they’re always a fun place to hang out for a drink after you’ve finished your shopping.

So here is what I suggest. If you’re living or staying in Spain, give the supermarkets are miss (unless you need canned goods or cleaning products) and for all your fresh produce needs, head to the nearest local market. They’re the best place to stock up your apartment if you’re staying in an AirBnB or simply to grab some delicious stables for a picnic in the park. An important thing to remember is that if you want to try Spain’s incredible wines, hams and cheeses - they’ll be much cheaper in the market than in a tapas bar. And do make the perfect picnic hamper fillers.

In this video I explore the Antón Martín market, which is nearby my office (it’s where I shop after work). I hit the Jamón booth, a fabulous cheese stall, the fruit stand, an olive stand, an offal stand, a place for olive oil, paprika and saffron, as well as a chicken shop and an excellent bakery. Along the way you’ll get tips and tricks for tackling your local market on your own!

I feel Spanish is the best! The food is so flavoursome! One of the highlights, for me, during my holidays in Spain is going to the markets...
I really think your Devour Tours videos are the best English language videos on Spanish food and culture; I've seen many (a lot of American) videos and non compare to the quality your producing.

There - said it.

I just discovered your videos. I miss spain so much. I'd say it's my favourite country. Why must Australia be so far away? Thank you for reminding me how beautiful Spain is.

If you go to spain you must try the fruit and vegetables. When we go abroad Spanish people miss two things ham and vegetables, that's how good and important they are for us. My brother just came from Ireland and God, he missed our food.

Great traditional market tips for a British Londoner such as myself intending to move to Spain. In London we are used to having to choose our own fruits and veg.

Admirable

Como dato, Spain is a giant in the olive oil world. The country produces almost half of the world’s olive oil, more than three times as much as Italy, Greece or Tunisia. Over 250 million olive trees grow in Spain. Jaen is the largest producer of Olive Oil in Spain and also world-wide. Just the province of Jaen produces more than the second largest producer country, Italy.

Me encantan tus videos, la informacion justa y precisa, muy bien explicado sin sobrecargar, se nota que lo disfrutas ^_^

I remember going with my mom to Prosperidad market when I was little and it was amazing. After, at the 90's, the big supermarkets came and lots of tradicionals markets dissppeared. Now some of the tradicionals markets are coming back and it is fastastic, the quality is better. I discovered your Chanel yesterday and it is very cool. By the way, the Spanish olive oil is much better than the italian one...sometimes, the italian olive oil is mixed with oil from Morocco, with has no the proper sanitary controls. I wish we export more olive oil to the rest of the world, it is really good. Besitos desde los Madriles
