Aye they were a tough lot. So tough in fact that one Union Irish Brigade repeatedly charged the line of "Bloody Lane" at Antietam, forcing the Confederates defending it to use up great deals of ammunition taking them down, which left them unable to continue defending it and forced them to either retreat or surrender. They chose to retreat.
