The Problem with the Collector's Edition - Sonic x Shadow Generations

In this video, I will be talking about the exciting Sonic x Shadow Generations: Collector's Edition. The edition includes a 10 inch statue featuring Sonic & Shadow, a CD soundtrack, mini Chao figures, keychain sneakers, an art book, steelbook, and more. While this version of the game is expensive at $250, fans are more upset at the manufacturers of the product, Limited Run Games, due to its poor reputation online amongst gamers and collectors. I'll try to quickly break down why fans are upset and reason why SEGA went to LRG for this and not produce one themselves, all while bringing my opinion into the conversation. Enjoy the video!

I still pre-ordered it, but I think my issue really lies with SEGA more than Limited Run Games. I'm just disappointed in SEGA for not just making this themselves instead of partnering with someone else. It feels like there's some disconnect between SEGA Western branch and the Japanese branch (which wouldn't be a surprise if you know the company's history...) when it comes to what fans want. Why does Japan get a collector's edition right off the bat, but not America/Europe, despite Sonic being more popular over here? Why not plan one to begin with for a game that's sorely being made as a way to jump on the Shadow hype train thanks to movie 3? Like, it feels like it would be common sense to make one given how much confidence SEGA themselves have in what they're making with Shadow Generations (look at the way they advertise this game compared to how they advertised Sonic Forces). I know that none of us know the internal side of things at SEGA, but it sometimes feel hard to give the marketing team a pass because there's simple things like giving fans the Japanese cover as a reversible that they weren't even planning on doing until fans started begging online until they decide to do it.

It's 2024, you've done reversible covers and collector's editions for past games (Superstars and Mania respectively), why isn't this just the standard and norm? Why do we have to keep asking for even the smallest of things to be done? Again, already pre-ordered mine from LRG (and even pre-ordered the Japanese collector's from Amazon JP), but sometimes SEGA just makes the experience an annoying one.

I tried to justify buying it but once I put it into perspective that you’re paying $200 for everything other than the game I just couldn’t see it being worth it.

I just pre-ordered the Xbox collectors edition, however with just a few hours to go before the deadline, I’m now tempted to order the PS4 version as well. If that’s the only way to get a physical copy of that version, it might be worth something in the future.

If you're in Europe (like me) you need to pay a extra $50 for some reason and ofcourse the $35 shipping

This is around $400+ for me to get it to Canada. For reference, the PS5 is currently on sale for $509.99 in Canada, lol.

I am also not a fan of Limited Run for what they did to their community manager.

Being a physical collector in 2024 is really expensive, sadly.

I will say it’s A LOT of money but hopefully it’s quality will make it worth it. After taxes and shipping it’s nearly $500 Canadian dollars

I checked a different statue with both sonic and shadow, whether you like it or not this is the cheaper option.

Man. When I preordered TMNT Shredder’s Revenge for the extra add ons like stickers and a Free Plzza Voucher it took over a year after the game’s launch to finally get the game. It was kinda a nightmare how it was handled.

I’m not gonna read through every comment to see if someone already said this, but what does sonic generations have to do with the Dreamcast? It has its own timeframe and identity. It seems like they’re trying so hard to equate something that doesn’t make any sense. And the price is just completely ridiculous because of that fact.

I appreciate the video. Was kind of on the fence on this but I think I will get the PS4 version. I am a collector and will keep it sealed and didn't know the exclusivity of the PS4 version. Thank you for mentioning it. I hope it will be worth it in the long run.

I think on buying it... I have to Pay it partly over Paypal but I have also other costs and the Japanese CE is also Nice! >< But the LRCE has a Physical OST... And what I dislike on iot that the Steam Version has no Physical Game... Why is it then still that Expensive? I don't get it. Also the Dreamcast Box... why?
