this movie never really gets recognition for how good it is

the thing i like about these early 2000s movies is they dont waste the first 15 minutes of the movies runtime with pure exposition, they just get straight to the plot as quickly as possible

I can't believe this movie came out 16 years ago. It seems like yesterday. I was in 5th grade at that time, and I still remember when me, my best friend, and her mom went to see this at the theater on a Friday night and then we had a sleepover afterwards. :)

The bool has one of the best plots ever.I first read it in middle school and everyone thought the story is amazing.
Now, in my 20s I am reading the book again as a college student. I still get the chills..

"You get bit by a rattlesnake, you won't die, but you'll get a few days of rest, or even get sent home. You get bit by a Yellow Spotted Lizard, you might as well go lie down in the hammock, 'cause that's about how long you got."
(Paraphrasing, but it was something like that)

I love the opening song to this. It sets the mood of the movie that transports us to the hot deserts of Camp Green Lake. Like a work songs sung by prisoners.

The film followed the book very closely. I still thought the book was slightly better though. There were so many hidden surprises in the novel and clever storytelling, and the film managed to capture them pretty well. This film and book were a large part of my growing up.

Okay but was anyone else shocked that it was Max Kasch (Zig Zag) singing at the beginning? He was like 18 when this was filmed and he sounds like Johnny Cash.

That song at the beginning is so chilling and awesome! I wish there was an extended version. It would make a perfect song for the opening of a movie like The Road or The Shawshank Redemption. Something dark and sad.

this scene creeped me out so much as a kid. i knew it was a movie, but i always thought about how dangerous that bite was and i worried about whether this kid would die.

then, i grew up from a kid to a teenager, and i realized: what if he DOES want to die? a kid with a troubled past being abused in a system dedicated to exploiting the vulnerable and unwanted dregs of society. kids being forced to dig in the hot desert sun. no one would come for him, no one would save him, no one would want to. he's a bad kid. a social pariah. an outcast. maybe in his mind, death was better than holes. maybe it was an act not of intentional self harm to escape to a hospital, but of suicide.

THEN, i became an adult, and i realized: if he was like the other kids, with a troubled past, a support system of friends and family miles and miles away (if he had any support system at all), a criminal record and society looking its nose down at him....then it would be so easy for him to be "erased" by the Warden and her ilk. a kid gets bitten by a rattler? why take him to a hospital and risk an investigation? it would be easier to let him die. no one would ever know. no one would ever find him. after all, Camp Greenlake may not have water, but it does have holes.

My dog has started covering our yard with holes, I think he's looking for treasure in camp Greenlake.

Holes was one of those movies I never quite understood as a kid yet I loved it anyway.

Now that I'm grown and suddenly learn about the context behind the settings, stories and characters, it makes me feel grateful that I had this film in my childhood.

The beginning freaked me out so much as a kid that I would keep my feet off the ground in fear of rattlesnakes being there.

Everyone's calling desperately for Barfbag to get away from the snake, except X-Ray, who just watches. He's the veteran of D-tent, he'd been there longer than any of them and knows every thought that may come. He already knows there's no stopping what's about to happen.

The actor who plays zig zag was the one who sung the lyrics to the intro song, and the rest of the D tent crew did the backing. They wrote the song during the 6 hour bus ride to the movie set

All these years, and I only just learned Zig Zag is the one singing in the beginning! I always thought it was Mr Sir!

Fun fact: If you are familiar with the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, you will know a character named Donatello who has a backstory exactly like this one
