"It’s basically the world’s largest Lost and Found, with both ‘lost’ and ‘found’ in the heaviest possible quotation marks there.” - John Oliver

Irrespective of the rights or wrongs regarding the marbles, Rishi behaved like an ill-disciplined 5 year old.

Do you know why the pyramids are in Egypt?
Because they were too heavy for the Brits to take them back to England.

*mentions Mona Lisa during a conversation regarding returning cultural artifacts to their homes*

France: *sweating profusely*

Lets be honest, the British museum is basically just a big building showing off all the stuff we stole at this point. And when it comes to the Elgin marbles, there isnt even a good reason like preservation to keep them anymore, as Greece has already set up a state of the art preservation facility and museum to care for them in the event they are returned.

Nope finders keepers, come and take em! Nobody is flocking to Greece to their not so famous museums. Lets talk about the amount of money and research that goes into caring for the worlds art and treasure. Declare your museums unesco protectors of antiquity!

Was it a conchious choice to call them the Elgin marbles rather than the Parthenon marbles or sculptures. Seems very odd when you even call them the Parthenon marbles in the thumbnail.

There is a law called "The British Museum Act of 1963" that prevent them from returning even if they wanted

Foreigner question: are the greeks 100% sure it wont be a repeat of those bronzes that the french handed off

"loan them back" sounds like a bully charging to get your stuff back.

Greece would never have even gotten independence from the Ottoman Empire if it wasn’t for Britain

Great priorities, wonder how they went bankrupt in the first place?

Greece had no interest in them.

If someone throws away something, and 5 retrieve it.
Store it, keep it safe, and then it acrues in value.
Then it still is mine.

But the Greacians were actually destroying the monument. Building out of the stones.
Britain saved the marble monuments.

Hey, even the French destroyed much of the Acropolis.

British people saved the history.

Look at the middle east.
See how much of history and statues etc. Have been destroyed in conflict with modern 'government'

In the uk we have so much of our own history, literally centuries, we could definitely fill all our museums with our own history

And why did Lord Elgin remove them? This is important and omitted here. To save them from destruction by the invading Ottoman Turks.

Surely the Greek thing should be in Greece.

Also, funny how the Greek PM is looking to strike a deal with Starmer, like its inevitable.

We’re not finished looking at them yet!
