Top 10 Modern Decks (That Wouldn't Exist Without Modern Horizons)

While Modern Horizons might have broken Modern with cards like Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis, it also added a ton of really sweet (and not broken) decks to the MTG Modern format. Let's discuss the top 10 as we prepare for Modern Horizons 2 spoilers to pick back up later this week!

I really love Soulherder. I love the blink / flicker archetype, and seeing the variety of Soulherder modern decks is just icing on the cake

I know it might be too meta, but the Blitz/Prowess decks really got a lot from MH1 in Firebolt, Seasoned Pyromancer (though most play Reveler for that slot I think), and of course, Lava Dart. Kiln Fiend-style decks existed before MH1, but MH1 really made them an alternative (now recognized the dominant option) over Burn for "kill you quickly", so it feels odd to not have some Red Spellslinger deck.

The amount of support for snow was also incredible, maybe not a tier deck, but a 3 mana one sided board wipe, and a 3 mana draw 7 are pretty decent.

I know it didn’t make it into any tier deck but my favorite addition was ayula. Bear tribal is terrible but the flavor is great

Hey Seth! You ranked my best friend's Cat deck #9 on your list! Oddly enough, she always mentions when you two cross paths and play matches. My friends and I have a running bet, wagering who will have the better win percentage against the other in overall matches. Gotta say, your commentary on getting punished by Quasali Ambusher is a wonderful story we tell new people who join our playgroup.

Thing i'm most worried about MH2, is when you look at what wotc said/designed for with the broken cards. Hogaak: Balanced for Commander, Urza: commander, Astrolabe: Draft.

Based on everything we've seen with recent standard sets. i don't think we're in a different spot. WotC has told us, they simply don't have the staff to test multiple formats, so when they design a card to sell to commander players, they have to test commander, and don't have the staff to also test modern/standard heavily for those cards.

Commander is simply such a wildly different format than any 60 card/1v1 format that i don't think their cards should be legal in 60 card formats. You can also see this in historic, with Tainted pact and MIzzix's Mastery.

If they want to sell to the huge market of Commander players, that's great, but ensure they are not 60 card format ruiners, even if you need a heavy handed mechanic like saying "if you have a command zone then, "

6:28 Lightning Skelemental also made my Athreos Mardu deck a thing! Even though it's definitely not tier 1, maybe not even tier 2, it's a really sweet deck that uses Athreos god of passage to "bolt" your opponents whenever you play stuff like lightning skelemental or ball lightning, or even Vexing devil! I don't think the deck would have enough power without Lightning Skelemental!

I love and hate modern horizons. Concept awesome, what it does to the price of the format, no so much. It forces people to buy into over priced card packs to bust open to compete at a high level of play.

While I'm happy they're reprinting enemy fetches, I was low key hoping they'd finish the horizon land cycle by reprinting Horizon Canopy and the allied pairings. Obviously burn would still be played without them but being able to cash a useless land for a chance at hitting a Light Up the Stage or something is huge for that archetype

My favorite is 5c Elementals, there's so much customization available thanks to its powerhouses.

I got 3 entries for the Top 10 decks that died because of bannings due to MH1 :
