A few things about this (all positive to the animation). 1. Hamilton and Laurens really did love each other in real life (there are love letters that get quite scandalous to prove it) they even told each other that they loved each other. And anyone who doubts that they had a relationship past being friends can fight me on it. 2. The joke that Laurens loved turtles comes from the fact that he had at least one field journal he kept about them. 3. About the end of the song when Hamilton says the last line. "I have so much work to do." You can tell he is so emotionally distraught because of the fact that he doesn't rhyme when he speaks like he does for the rest of the play. He does the samem thing when Philip dies. That's how you know he is in emotional distress.
