What should you do if someone is choking? Melisa W. Lai-Becker, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician at Mass General Brigham, discusses how to respond to someone choking, and how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on adults and infants. Choking symptoms include a person not being able to make a sound, holding their neck, or turning color in their face. Call for emergency help immediately and begin providing care. First, try hitting between the shoulder blades, firmly and sharply with the heel of your hand, 5 times. If that doesn’t work, begin doing the Heimlich maneuver, where you stand behind the choking person and give firm abdominal thrusts above their belly button. For infants, hold them face down with their bottoms above their heads, and hit firmly on the back 5 times. Keep alternating back blows and the Heimlich maneuver until medical help arrives. Choking can happen anywhere and anytime, but by staying calm and providing care, you can help save a life.
