Sighing is a long deep breath that can be involuntary and can often be in response to a stressor or a sense of relief. Sighing and yawning are very common and normal human reactions that we all experience. But why do we sigh and what does it mean?

Most of use experience around 12 involuntary sighs (a.k.a. ‘spontaneous sighs’) per hour but what if you are sighing even more frequently? While sighing itself is natural and normal and poses no actual threat to the body, excessive sighing may be the sign of a deeper issue.

Patrick explains how frequent sighing can mean you have a problem with irregular breathing. Frequent signing also may prevent the body from engaging in regular breathing by exhaling too much carbon dioxide.

As Patrick says, the best thing we can do is pay attention to our own breathing, observe how often we sigh and yawn and work to improve our breathing patterns. In doing so, the frequency of our sighing and yawning should reduce.

I’ve developed this post Covid. It definitely gets worse after activity. 18 months of this is an absolute torture. Is this type of breathing related to dysautonomia? Thank you!
