Thousands of anti-racism demonstrators gathered in the streets of Oxford on Tuesday to demand the removal of a statue of Cecil Rhodes, a Victorian imperialist in southern Africa who made a fortune from mines and endowed Oxford University's Rhodes scholarships.

In the latest of a series of protests in the UK held in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, protesters appeared to observe social distancing measures to protect against the spread of the coronavirus.

But as more joined the protest, the narrow streets in front of Oriel College building appeared packed.

The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has continued to spark protests - and drive change - around the world.

On the day Floyd was being buried in his hometown of Houston, Texas, people gathered in London’s Parliament Square for a vigil timed to coincide with his funeral.

And across the capital, in the city's Docklands area, a statue of the 18th-century slave owner Robert Milligan was removed from its plinth.

The decision to take it down came after the toppling of a statue of the slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol by anti-racist protesters on Sunday.
