Broke Immigrant to Profitable DAY TRADER

I'm a Taiwanese Canadian immigrant. My family and I immigrated to Canada in the early 2000s. As an average middle class family from Taiwan, adjusting to the lifestyle in North America was not easy. There were many financial struggles, and a lot of shame.
I'm very grateful to be able to immigrate to Canada, and on top of that, I have strong parents showing me the true meaning of perseverance and hard work. My immigrant parents are extremely positive. Rather than focusing on the lack of money, or cry and whine, they turned those into practical lessons for my siblings and I. We delivered news papers, collected bottles, and worked part time jobs in order to enjoy luxuries like eating out once a month. We learned to work for our money and reap the fruits of our labor.
It's with the same positive mindset, and worth ethic, that I climbed my ranks up in my former career, before quitting my job to day trade full time. The process was anything but easy, but I learned from my parents. Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. This applies very much to any career path, including day trading.

Thanks for sharing. I am refugee from Laos and def understand your story. Our family arrived in the US with $20 left after paying people to get us out of Laos after US withdrew from Vietnam. My parents raised 3 small kids on minimum wages. They achieved their dreams of purchasing a house 9 years later. I work as a field engineer as a DOD contractor, my brother owns his own company, our lil sister owns her own multi-million dollar company. We all owed our parents for our personal success. They thought us hard work is needed to achieve. Now that they are retired, it is our job to care for them. I recently bought a house in FL for them to retire in. Seeing our parents work so hard thought us to work hard and not give up. Hard work will pay off. I can def relate. Thanks for sharing.

This video made me cry (oh the irony! lol) I LOVE your parents for trying SO hard for you and your siblings. And I love you for following through on that legacy. I saw in your eyes what this means to you and I wish you NOTHING but continued success. I think you are an even greater person than you are a trader...and that's saying A LOT. PS I am that parent now.

Great story. Have a similar story as immigrants back in the 70s 80s. Keeps me grounded and respectful empathetic of people around me going through the same thing now.

As a fellow immigrant from the Caribbean and been in the trading game for 2 years now, I can relate so much to your story. My parents also sacrificed so much to get me and my sister to the USA. I've been steadily growing my account and its getting there but not where I want it to be. There is a lot of work left to be done, so I can trade full-time and retire my parents early. Also fun fact, with the Toyota Corolla you mentioned, I also have a car my Mom got me a few years back, Honda Civic 2002, and I still drive it because its such a powerful symbol. Thanks for sharing this part of your story with us Shay! You are one of the few very relatable traders out here :) I appreciate you.

Your story is an enormous inspiration. Your parents are really tough and strong and they’ve grown you through these principles. You are now a strong and realised person and they certainly are so proud of you❤️ we all are.

I stumbled upon your youtube channel while searching on how to day trade. Thank you for sharing your story. I am also an immigrant; immigrated from the Philippines when I was eight years old. We share the same story. I love the quote that you shared at the end; I will remember it and share with my boys when they get older. Thanks again!

Definitely want to hear about your transition story, your prep and how that matched up with reality. I am a Canadian who immigrated to USA and also lived in Surrey back in '86. I delivered the Vancouver Province and the Surrey Leader through many rainy days on my bicycle. But, like you, I had to work for my clothes. You have made me laugh many times and I am thankful for all you have given me.

As immigrant my self, just to thank you for sharing your journey, one that I can relate, as I am sure many of us do as well. Resourceful and resilient, yup... that's baked in on us who dared.

Wow, what an amazing story. So very glad your parents taught you to work to find solutions to your problems instead of sitting there and complaining. I love how you are successful to make your parents peony’s and how you bought your dad a new Toyota. (I bought a used Carrolla last year and love it). We need more amazing parents like yours in the world 😊😊

Beyond refreshing. my wife and i have worked very hard to become independant entrepreneurs. The road we have traveled has been a long one of hard work. Refreshing to hear this and applaud you in all your success. I hope other young people listen to you and realize they all have what it takes, you just have to do things you don't want to and take responsibility when you screw something up or fail. Then you have to pick yourself up and try again. Oh and it really helps to be generous to others and kind. It's just not easy but very much worth it.

Thanks for sharing your story. I know from personal experience that talking about the hard times can be tough. My dad is from Germany, and he came to the USA to go to school. He met my mom who is from Oklahoma. They went to Germany after they married, and I was born about a year later in Munich. When I was two years old we came across the "pond" on a steamship out of Rotterdam. We lived in Kansas City, MO for around 9 years, and moved to Denver, CO when I was fifteen. I've lived in the Denver area now for fifty years. I can relate to some of what you are speaking about. In my case I had classmates call me a Nazi because of my German heritage. Those kinds of comments can be hurtful if you allow them to be. I have seen several of your videos here on YouTube and have hit the like button. Thanks for sharing your stories. Your positive energy and "bad jokes" are a real treat! In North America we are all either immigrants or two to three generations removed from someone in the family being from somewhere else...Unless of course one is full blooded American Indian. We are more alike than not.

Thanks Shay to share your story with us, I actually cried the moment you said about that horrible experience in the grocery store. I'm an immigrant myself! Please share your other story with us.

I joined a few years ago, feeling HT's day trading "how to" content was created with what was lightyears beyond anyone else's intentions. Today, she just shared the most authentic, and moving video about the source of her "WHY". This is why Shay, my day trading teacher-coach-and mentor, is not just making phenomenal content, she's creating opportunities for everyone to better their own lives, without judgement, and intent on seeing fellow human beings face a little less suffering in our lives. Aloha, Shay! Mahalo Nui Loa!
