From a dermatologist angle, putting a retinol on the night before a big event isn't really effective, this may just make your face look more irritated the next day.

Honestly a good chemical exfoliant then a moisturizer routine that won't upset your skin. + Maybe trapping that in as a mask first is probably best.

You had at first but lost me at "exfoliator to cleanse your face". Your face is not a rag, nor does it need any physical scrub to exfoliate especially when you’re already breaking out, its at its more sensitive state. Be gentle.
