Calculating Uncertainty 5 - Averaging Multiple Measurements

preview_player
Показать описание
This is the fifth one in the set of lessons on the assessment of total uncertainty in the final result. In this lesson, we learn to calculate the total uncertainty in case of averaging multiple measurements. In the next final lesson, we will be calculating the total uncertainty in case of timing experiments.

Please ask your questions in the comments section below. I would love to answer! :)

Hi Sir,
I have a question. I will put it in terms of the wire example.
What if I take six measurements of diameter of wire and calculate the error as shown but I also have to fine average diameter of multiple wires (for example 10 different wires). If I take the average diameter simply, what happens to the errors we obtained from multiple measurements for each wire? Thanks

Help
i don't understand. Why in the book that my teacher let us to read, it says that the absolute uncertainty is the deviation with the highest module?
Like, for example, an exercise is:
the temperature of one object is measured 5 times:
T1=25, 0
T2= 24, 9
T3=25, 0
T4= 25, 2
T5= 25, 0
the average value is 25, 02; but then the teacher wrote that the absolute uncertanty is 0, 15, whyy???

wait is it the mean minus x data or the x data minus the mean or it doesnt matter as long as it is positive?

I do not think this is right. In this case you are saying 1 measurement is as good as 1000 measurements. In random processes the uncertainty should fall off with the sqrt(measurements) (Poison statistics). There is some random noise about a mean, and the more measurements you take, the more certainty you have in the mean value. This will give you the uncertainty of your measurement aperatus though :-).
