This was definitely the most badass Viking of his time
He literally was the rear guard
Nothing but respect

The tale of the meeting between King Harold, his brother Tostig - who was with the Norwegians - and King Harald is the stuff of legends.
The English caught the Norseman unprepared, unarmored, and basically sunning themselves. They had just crushed the English northern forces at Fulford and weren't expecting any resistance any time soon.
A small retinue of men rides up to parlay. At their head is Harold Godwinson, who asks Tostig to abandon this campaign, retake fealty, and be rewarded with his old Earlship back. Hardrda asks Godwinson what the English King was prepared to give him for peace? To which Godwinson is said to have replied "Six feet of good English earth, or as he is so tall, as much as he requires."
Not long after this, the battle commenced.

The source for this incident, is the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, which is interesting as it praises the actions of an enemy. It would be expected that a Viking source would tell a heroic tale of their own men put this case is the opposite

Ironically the Normans that succeeded the Viking’s and Anglo Saxons were French lord’s descended from Viking mercenaries so technically the Viking age did not cease in this country then

Legends says that the dude was a Berserker who was fighting naked and in full rage. He was destined to Valhalla even before his first strike hit

I’ve heard of this. It’s a shame we weren’t able to find out that Viking’s name.

If they hadn’t stabbed him from below, the entirety of England would probably be pillaged by that one madman

A greater last stand was that of King Harold of England’s carls at Hastings. Once their king was slain, they refused to either retreat or surrender. They fought to the death, every one of them, thousands of men.

According to a famous British historian there was a final Viking raid in the 1200's which was sharply dealt with by the Normans.

If we are going to give credit to legend, then you have to give credit to Leonidas. If you want to base it off of know historical fact, the Belgians or polish in WWII, or the Americans in Korea are pretty good contenders.

I wonder who would have won a fight William the Conqueror and his Norman Army versus Harold hardrada's Viking Army
