The protocol allows you to share files with remote computers or servers in the same network. Over the years, the SMB protocol was modified and updated by Microsoft, first enhancing its performance, then updating its security.

The security of devices on your network may depend on which of the SMB versions you use. Older versions of the protocol may leave your network exposed to attacks. For example, one of the most famous malware that exploited the SMBv1 protocol was WannaCry, which infected 200,000 Windows devices across 150 countries.

Quick question about SMB1. I am trying to use a USB drive in my router as a shared space across all my computers. One of my computers is telling me I need SMB version 1 to do this. Why is that if it's no longer a valid protocol?

There is a user living with me that has her PC hooked up to my network but with a different Microsoft account. Can i still add her has part of the group or does she have to be on the same Microsoft account ?
