King Arthur in my opinion was a mythologized figure.
A warlord existed.
He kicked a lot of Saxon asses.
He died. The end.
That's the historical Arthur.
The Celts just loved him.
He likely was a Roman warlord not a king. Likely at Badon.
With Ambrosius Aurelianus.
I'm sure those two were different individuals. But may of met.
The earliest Arthur mentioned was a Roman warlord "Dux Bellorum" fighting with the Kings of Britain.
Along with other generals.
In another record thats Ambrosius Aurelianus.
So we have two commanders. So it's not a one or the other contradiction.
It's likely Arthur was mythologized over time.
A amazing warrior.
One century later he was exaggerated beyond reason.
Alexander the great was only written about centuries after he died and we don't doubt his existence.

I think alot of old stories of times that far back are mysteries to us because we live in a time where magic gets sucked out of everything. Looking at how people in BC times saw things, you have to channel a sense of wonder you have as a child. Where you never went to, or heard of, a school to shape your image of the world around you and what you know is based on what you come up with along with influence from others around. Alot of old stories of magic is stemmed from this sort of imagination. What we'd consider basic ordinary things like sand being turned into glass in big unmystical factories was Alchemy and magic to them. When people felt the Air they thought it was air spirits, we just think "oh wind".

The story of Merlin the Wizard helping to get a sword out of stone was probably more saying how he was a blacksmith who was able to transform the metal ore found in rocks into a sword to give to Arthur to use in battle and having been victorious in battles using it, it was deemed a magical sword. Imagine having never seen anything like that, the process of blacksmithing, you'd be blown away and you would think this man was a wizard who led to your success in battle with this magical artifact he somehow created out of rocks.
