What happened to the Dutch settlers in New Netherland? New Netherland was one of the few non-British European colonies in the American Northeast and was later incorporated by the British into the thirteen colonies of British America, later to become New York and New Jersey. There were nearly 10k European colonists at the time of annexation in 1674 and these Dutch Americans would have a massive impact on the United States. Thanks for watching

...and Brooklyn actually is named after the Dutch town of Breukelen, meaning "broken land".
Another Dutch town is "Haarlem"!

We are still here. Although the Dutch first settled Manhattan and Long Islands, they later bought Bergen county from the natives to establish the first colony in NJ. Bergen used to encompass a larger area which is now parts of southern NY and the surrounding counties in NJ extending west to the Delaware River.

Many Sephardic Jews fled from Spain and Portugal during the Reconqueista to the Netherlands 🇳🇱. Many of these Sephardis then went to places like the Caribbean, Dutch Brazil and New Amsterdam. This was the foundation of the Jewish community in New York which is now one of the biggest in the country. The Dutch also brought West African enslaves with them which started the African American community in New York.

Sojourner Truth, famous ex-slave and abolitionist was in fact a New York Dutch. She only spoke Dutch as her first language until she was sold to an English-speaking man around 1810 and carried an accent for her entire life.

New Amsterdam was also a pretty multiethnic city overall due to the Dutch being multicultural and accepting minorities from Europe and uh.... participating in a certain uncouth trade in Africa.
