The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is the newest version of NCLEX that is set to release in spring of 2023. This new NCLEX exam will include big changes such as new question item types, a shift toward case studies (simulated nursing scenarios), and scoring methods that you'll want to know about as nursing students and nurse graduates.

The NCLEX exam is the licensing exam that nurse graduates must pass to practice nursing in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Next Generation NCLEX sample questions will include 5 new question item types, including the following:

-Extended multiple response NCLEX questions
-Extended drag and drop NCLEX questions
-Cloze (drop-down) NCLEX questions
-Enhanced hot spot (highlighting) NCLEX questions
-Matrix/Grid NCLEX questions

In addition, the NEXT Generation NCLEX (NGN) is moving to a new, polytomous scoring model, which will utilize a 0/1, +/-, and rationale scoring method.

There will be a minimum of 70 questions and a maximum of 135 that are actually scored. However, when you include the non-scored pretest questions, there is a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 150 that you will actually take.

In this video, Nurse Sarah explains her study guide method for how she'd prepare for the Next Generation NCLEX news if she were a nursing student or nurse graduate. Learn NCLEX study tips you can implement now so that you'll be prepared.

Just passed my NCLEX today in 75 and got to try the new question types when I finished. I actually really liked them! I also LOVE that they’re giving partial marks for SATA. My exam had a LOT of SATA and it was so scary that I miss one or add one too many I’d lose the entire question. My boyfriend is taking the new NCLEX next year and I’m very happy with the changes I’ve seen so far!

Nursing school taught me to re-learn how I learn.
Memorizing facts and values was what constituted much of my studying habits since elementary school up until high school graduation. Still learning how to effectively study to make it through nursing school. Critical thinking is my weakest point. Hope to get better at it for the NGN.

I’ve always believed Nclex is not for all but studying, you need God’s grace to pass .

I graduated and passed my NCLEX in the 2017. I wish we had partial scoring instead of all or nothing. Also, we had up to 265 questions. Best of luck to the students taking it!

In my opinion I think it’s better since we are getting a point for the correct SATA options selected

I am so glad I graduate December 2022! ATI has been putting in NGN questions in our proctored exams and they are dreadful.. they increase the anxiety x 100 because you have to slow down to a snails pace to do these questions. ADVICE: Take your time when answering!!!

Sarah I just started nursing school. 5 weeks ago. My program has been a little disorganized. Your videos have been a lifesaver. Thank you for having these videos and quizzes and tools available.

I took the original Nclex and in the example question here about stroke I can see a positive benefit actually because it brings up a topic you will actually be seeing. What is frightening is if they pick some esoteric rare disease that you never saw or heard of during clinicals or lecture. Also glad to see they are doing partial points.
Good luck to all taking the next gen exam!!

I graduate in May 2023 and am incredibly nervous to be one of the first taking the exam. My program unfortunately isn’t testing us with case studies and the new testing methods so it’s scary, thank you for sharing this information. If you have any study material resources it would be much appreciated!
