The bass is the linchpin of your mix. It's tricky to mix, but with these bass guitar mixing techniques, you can get it big and round, whether or not you have enough subs to feel it.

In this tutorial, I'll show you bass compression, bass EQ, and some psychoacoustic tricks for making your bass sound really big.

Tracks from "We Love Your Name" by Jaye Thomas, featuring the AMAZING Cassie Campbell on the bass.

I've just started to learn the bass guitar and have asked tons of local players about the fit between the bass and drum and gotten tons of different answers that really didn't make sense.
Finally, in this video, you've answered that question.
Clearly, I've been talking to the wrong people. It all makes sense now.
Thanks for the tutorial that you may not have realized you made for the bass player.

I previously hated adding distortion on bass until I figured out how to do it right. The best way I found is to use parallel processing. Setup your primary channel for just a good solid sound. On your secondary channel, high pass around 200 and low pass around 2k. Then compress the snot out of it. Once you do this, find a distortion processor that will give you a nice round warm distortion with a lot of harmonics. You want to make sure there is no bite or raspy harshness to the sound, just a lot of mid-range harmonics. Then GENTLY mix this in with the primary channel. This allows you to pick up detail and tonal definition without getting a nasty sound. It stands up in the mix. Subtle grace notes or runs are not lost, both due to the distortion and the heavy compression.
I like a bass that represents the same feel as a pipe organ. Long sustained bass notes do not have to be loud or obnoxious to make the image sound huge. Many make the mistake of using the drums - primarily the kick to give the big image, however this gets bothersome, and will get you complaints that it is too loud. Use the bass for imaging. Drums are just for punch. The 70s engineers knew this, but didn't have the massive subs to fill out the very low end with bass guitar.

Hi keep up the good work. Please can you make a video on how to setup in-ear monitors on an analog mixer i.e. connections and everything that has to do with in-ear monitors

Estaba realmente preocupado por hacer una buena mezcla en la iglesia, no soy experto en audio y si algo suena mal suelo hacer mas brillante el canal, pero ahora con tu contenido puedo mejorar el audio. Thanks a lot from Mexico! keep going!

I come here for the technical insights but I also end up remembering the corny humor more.

It's awesome you mentioned the psychoacoustic effect of overtone frequencies to make bass sound fuller!

Hi, I appreciate very much all your videos, and especially the ones for specific instruments like this one (bass) and for vocals.
I would like to see videos for

- violine (considering microphone or other recording equipment)
- trumpet, and
- cajon. 🙂
