After a recent trip to Japan and trying on many watches at the Nakano Broadway stores, my next watch will either be a Panerai or Grand Seiko. I believe that GS are really ahead of most other brands when it comes to cases and dials. But there’s something special about Panerai that I really enjoy. That CWC watch appeals to me greatly as I love a proper tool watch.

These are all beautiful timepieces, and you’re correct Ash; when choosing luxury wristwatches, it really is a matter of A) personal preference and B) intended use. I am also quite sure that you will not be in the least bit surprised when I say that my apex wristwatch is the 36mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer. Sometimes, everything comes together so perfectly that it cannot be improved up. This is my assessment of the Explorer. I love mine, as do the vast majority of Rolex Explorer owners.

I'd recommend selling the 'Pepsi' and putting in some additional funds to acquire a Patek Philippe Calatrava - the new ones in that line are simply sublime, especially that grey dial one - chef's kiss as a prop'a dress watch and something that I believe will perfectly complement your subtle yet authoritative personality Sir

Thank you for your content - it is truly informative & inspirational

I too have been lusting after the Aquaterra. Beautiful watch!!

All your watch selections are wonderful, Ash, although I truly believe your new Cartier Santos on that leather strap is a superlative choice with the tweed jacket you're wearing in this video.

"It's good to have something to lust over." -I couldn't possibly agree more.

Good commentary with the Cartier and dispersing the Explorer.

Very nice video, thank you. I agree on Omega. Your point on “classic iconography” is spot on. The Seamasters have changed so radically over the decades that the seem historically ungrounded. And their other modern offerings are beautifully constructed yet have little classical appeal, imho. All the best.

I bought a rose gold on steel 38mm Aqua Terra as my dress watch. Really love it.

I am fortunate to have a range of watches with the Explorer being my daily wearer, it's perfect in so many ways and looks great in business or casual attire and it is also much lighter on the wrist than the Sub! I admit they take time to bond with but its now the one watch I couldn't get rid of.

If you’re going to buy an aquaterra, make sure you’re very OK with scratches on your watches. The polished center links on my aquaterra would scratch just looking at them and they drove me crazy to the point I unloaded the watch because all it did was collect scratches. The all brushed rail master I replaced it with is a sleeper hit.

Hold on to the Pepsi Ash. If nothing else it’s a great investment piece. If it discontinues, it will not only be more valuable but highly sought after.

Didn't expect to see an AP in that line up.

I wore a Santos in the '90's and really enjoyed it. Quite tempted by the green dial option but it might not hold its value, which is a consideration.
I'd recommend obviously buying what you wish to wear but also avoiding fashion based choices.
My personal choice these days are understated 40's or 50's watches by companies such as IWC. Innovative horology and limited numbers available.

I purchased my first Rolex Submariner in Aden in 1967 for UKP 36.00 (Yes, it's genuine.!!). It's still going strong.
I then bought a Gold/Stainless Steel GMT in 1981 and a second Submariner in 1995.
They are good, tough and reliable watches. 😉

Ash I think an IWC Portuguese would be a good choice on your chaps guide.

Just returned from a trip to Asia with spending 6 days in Osaka and Tokyo. The stores were full of Rolexes in every store that I walked into and I walked into nearly all of them. In Dontonburi (Osaka) every single store had hundreds of them. In Tokyo, every district I toured (Shinbuya, , Ginza, Nakano) had hundreds in their displays cases. Granted, most were pre-owned, but many of them were new. Whatever shortage there might be here in the U.S., it was just opposite in Japan. I am not a Rolex fan, but recognize they are the #1 most desired brand. If I ever change my mind about Rolex, I'd buy it in Japan.

FYI, bought my Grail Watch in 202O, the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I have been very satisfied with it ever since. It is the best watch in my very small collection.

I have 3 watches on a near constant rotation (Seiko 009 SKX, Squale 50 Atmos, Omega Speedmaster - The 39mm Automatic version on a Bond Goldfinger Nato Strap (Works very well). For Formal wear I have a gold Cartier Tank that lived on a standards black leather strap, I hadn't wore it for years until my sister bought me Green Alligators leather straps for my birthday. I can't stop wearing the Tank this summer. I was saving for a Rolex Explorer but now, i'm leaning towards the Santos, now I have fallen in love with the Cartier brand.
