I Made an Outhouse and Built it like a Tank!

I made an outhouse that is overbuilt like a tank. It has a concrete foundation, a skylight, a deck, and it sits on bedrock. Making it was fun and it took a lot out of me. If only I remembered the hinges for the doors. the outhouse is for my off-grid cabin in Northern Canada and I'm hoping it lasts for years to come.

Vent your pit with PVC pipe. The pipe will have a draft like a stove pipe and will naturally draw out odors from inside the outhouse. I would recommend a minimum of 2 inch.

This is not meant to be a flippant comment - I know you have had many challenges - but your laugh when things go wrong or when you win through just is awesome. Stay real - love being on your journey with you.

Here’s a little outhouse tip, in the winter put a piece styrofoam down to sit on . Keeps your butt from freezing on a plastic toilet seat

Make your door swing out, and sturdy. Bears have been known to use out houses. Ventilate, lime for odor and insect control, and a thermacell for mosquitoes. Nice job on your outhouse.

No matter what you do you will get mice and bugs in the outhouse. One suggestion that we do is use a plastic coffee can to put your toilet paper in so the mice don’t tear it up for bedding. It’s worked great for us for over 10 years as long as you remember to put the lid on securely! Lol

Hi Jay, I enjoy watching your videos! If you ever pour concrete again, consider adding some reinforcement such as rebar or other steel elevated from the ground in a continuous pattern. It will work tremendously and provide a great deal of strength (and also help with crack prevention). Also, when cutting studs, consider using your speed square as a cutting guide for a near perfect cut. Just make sure the square is butted firmly against the wood. And lastly (sorry), it’s always convenient to mark an “x” on the side of the line you wish to cut. So when you measure 84” for instance, you want to cut on the far side of the line so the piece remains 84”. Have fun!!

So here’s the thing. I never thought I would watch a whole video of a man making an outhouse but ya know what??? I liked it. I think you did a wonderful job. I’m not disappointed that I watched it. I think though I’m jumping all over the videos because I already watched you make a wood shed. I’m new to your videos and I’ve been just picking and choosing. Thank you and take care

Love the enthusiasm. And by the way, the previous video with full use of natural sound mixed together was awesome.

In our outhouse we took a 5 gallon pail and cut the bottom off of it. We then slid that through the sheeting on the seating area and put a toilet seat lid on top. The lip on the top of the bucket stops it from going through the sheeting. The length of the pail helps to direct “stuff” down into the hole and minimize overspray on your framing (even with the vapor barrier).

Hi Jay. Think about putting a vent pipe from under the seat and out by the roof. Will keep the smell from dwelling inside,

Jay, first let me say that chicken pot pie looked so delicious! Yum, especially with the gravy on top! You are doing such a great job on that outhouse! Built solid for sure! You can tell you are enjoying yourself doing this renovation on and around your cabin! You will have years of enjoyment I’m sure! BRAVO JAY! ❤

You might have had your pie a bit low down in your oven Jay. I usually put any I make in just over the middle part of the oven as it is hotter there than on the lower rungs where you would have to cook it for longer. Looked delicious though. Everything is coming together and love watching your endevours and learning curve. We all had to start somewhere. PS. Get a airfryer, game changer...

Forgot to submit that that pie is quite possibly the best looking thing you've made on this channel.
