The Akbash is a large and powerful breed known for its role as a livestock guardian dog. Here are some key points about the Akbash:
The Akbash originated in the Anatolian region of Turkey, a vast plateau that has been home to nomadic shepherds for thousands of years. The breed's development was influenced by the need to protect livestock from predators in this rugged and diverse landscape.
The Akbash is considered one of the ancient livestock guardian breeds, with a lineage that may date back to as far as 3000 years. Its genetic lineage suggests that it shares ancestry with other white-coated livestock guardian breeds found in the Mediterranean Basin and Central Asia.
The primary purpose of the Akbash was to guard sheep and goats from predators such as wolves, bears, and jackals. The breed's white coat was an intentional choice, allowing the dogs to blend in with the flock and remain unnoticed by predators until it was too late.
The Akbash has been traditionally bred by Turkish shepherds who rely on these dogs to safeguard their livelihoods. These shepherds needed a dog that was not only physically capable but also independent and intelligent enough to manage a flock without constant human supervision.
The nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyles of many Turkish shepherds necessitated a breed that could travel with them and adapt to various terrains and climatic conditions. This way of life helped shape the Akbash into a hardy and resilient breed.

I have a female Akbash named Zara (meaning luminosity). She is an amazing dog but like so many things there are upsides and downsides. The good: she is beautiful, affectionate, athletic, protective, and loyal. She is very cold hardy too. I live in Canada and the cold temperatures are no problem for her. She is very much an outdoor dog in any weather. The bad: she is willful and stubborn (or in other words, hard to train and she will test your patience). She needs a lot of space and exercise. I have an acreage and I like to walk a lot myself so we are well matched that way but I don't think she would do well in an apartment or in any situation where she couldn't roam. She barks more than I would like but in her mind she is just protecting me. They need a lot of attention but they reward you for it.

They are truly amazing! We have a second Akashi, and they are unique, loyal, very athletic dogs with a strong protective instinct. Beautiful, too.

YES, in Turkey they are first choise, together with Kangals, who are one of the best pack of LGD of aboriginal breeds in the world. Together 5-10 Akbashs vs Pack of Wolves killer combination.
