gli strumenti di Qgis sono infiniti! non so se l'algoritmo di calcolo è esattamente lo stesso di quello (da Vector geometry) che avete descritto, ma per generare il poligono di estensione di un layer, usavo lo strumento di geoprocessing Layer tools->Extract layer extent, che nella tabella attributi riporta le coordinate dei vertici dell'estensione. Proseguite con questi video, dai confronti di utilizzo di Qgis si scoprono sempre procedure e strumenti nuovi!
