How many Super Star Destroyers did the Empire have? | Star Wars Legends Explained

On today's Star Wars Legends lore video, we examine how many
Super Star Destroyers were used by the Empire!

Brief breakdown of my findings:

9 Super Star Destroyers destroyed in Imperial command (Exec, Annih, Enforcer, Terror, Veng (Exe), Fondor SSD, Arc Hammer, EoP) + 6 Warlord/Imp Faction ships (Aggr, Iron Fist, Reaper, Jerec, Kni Ham, x1) + 2 Captured (Lucy, Guard) + 3 Black Fleet SSDs +12 Core Assault Ships + 2 (Megador/Dominion) + 2 (Eclipse I/II) + at least 4 Bellators/Assertors = 40 dreadnoughts

Add to that, 6 Republic Era dreadnoughts, the Super Star Destroyers of the Deep Core, and unseen ships and I estimate ~50 SSDs.

The math behind this video! Watch first then check for details:

9 SSDs destroyed in Imperial command (Exec, Annih, Enforcer, Terror, Veng (Exe), Fondor SSD, Arc Hammer, EoP) + 6 Warlord ships (Aggr, Iron Fist, Reaper, Jerec, Kni Ham, x1) + 2 Captured (Lucy, Guard) + 3 Black Fleet SSDs +12 Core Assault Ships + 2 (Megador/Dominion) + 2 (Eclipse I/II) + at least 4 Bellators/Assertors = 40 dreadnoughts

Well, at least we can definitely agree on the fact that they had at least one.

I always wonder how many SSD the empire have. Thank you for telling me your channel is amazing. Great video

Focus all firepower on the super star destroyer!

Last time I was this early, the Sun Crusher was still canon!

If there was 25, 000 Star Destroyers in all and SSDs are used as command ships, then the likelihood is that there was a LOT more SSDs, even if only one per area (lets call it a sector). A galaxy is a large place and would be divided in to a lot of "areas of responsibility", even if only a lowish percentage of areas had a single SSD, you would still have them coming out of your ears if you ever brought them all together in one place.

Say only 1% of your capital ships are SSDs in your galactic fleet and you have 25, 000 in total, you will still have AT LEAST 250 SSDs. The whole idea the New Republic searched, found and destroyed every Imperial capital ship is ludicrous on a galactic scale if they scattered at all, let alone purpose made self supporting bases out in the boonies. The percentage is libel to be higher than 1% so there could be a thousand or more, which means the bulk of the SSDs and SDs are actually unaccounted for, no matter the wishful thinking of authors when trying to grasp the sheer scale of a galactic empire.

25, 000 SDs for a galaxy patrol is actually laughably low, even just for the area humans can see with the naked eye from Earth. Which even limiting that to within 5, 000 light years instead of 16, 000 is still 600, 0000, 000 star systems.

Too many, for my liking. Those credits and resources could have been better invested in refitting our already quite capable Imperial-class Star Destroyers and replacing our starfighters, of which are sorely underwhelming in performance. As pretty and as powerful as they are, we'd have a better shot at victory with ISDs with improved point defence, secondary bridges and more potent starfighters. A pity the Emperor does not see it this way.

I'd say the Empire had between 30 and 50 dreadnoughts. I won't lie that they were immensely wealthy and could pump out whatever they needed, but perhaps the reason they kept the real numbers so secret was because they had to rely on fear and intimidation. You always fear the enemy you can't see more than the one you can, and not knowing what massive ship is hiding just out of range, or how many, is sure to keep the people in line.

Really cool! A great examination video. Keep it up!

I always felt that there should be hundreds of SSDs. An empire with the capacity to make 2 death stars without alerting the rebel alliance (meaning it wasnt a significant portion of the navys resources) should have no problem making such ships

Great video, I always like estimates of faction's strenght. Also could you make a similar video on:
-Empire's battlecruisers
-Empire's star destroyers (the number of ISDs is well known to be 25k, but with other types how many would that be?)
-CIS' star destroyers (1000m-2000m)
-Republic' s star destroyers

I think about 60 executers alone and I would add another 70 belators and 70 vengance classes cause we saw alot of those ships in the bys defence fleet. Also just 2 Assertors, the assertor herself and the wrath.
There was also the Eclipse and the Eclipse 2

The Eclipse is my favourite dreadnought

Edit: Wait there were TWO?!?!

The Empire certainly had more than the ones you listed. However, the imperial military was spread throughout the entire galaxy and couldn't afford to focus it's resources on too many expansive projects, which is why they often saved money with vehicles like the TIE series or the AT-ST for example.
So I believe somewhere between 50 and 100 would actually be a good estimate

God its insane how much information star wars has outside of its movies, I know a lot about Star Wars for just being 13, but some of this stuff i don't know or havn't heard.

Executor class star destroyer is my favorite.

I definitely think there were over a hundred. Considering the sheer size and scale of the Executor class and the fact it makes up over half the list, I can only assume that smaller dreadnoughts like the Bellator were at least produced in similar numbers. The Assertor class likely numbers less than the Executor, as does the Vengeance, but I'd conservatively guess a half dozen of each class - mainly due to the Byss Defence Fleet. The artwork appears to have both classes in the background at a time I believe is after Operation Shadowhand has begun along with multiple Bellators/Mandator III. I haven't seen numbers or loss reports for any of the Mandator class, so I'd be surprised if there weren't 20-30 ships of all three series scattered around somewhere. Which brings us to over 90 vessels already including the ones named in the video - and you just know that as more games are released we'll see even more Dreadnoughts emerge, so I'm guessing over a hundred
