Bert used the 'house buying' ambition as a tool to display his status. He's saying "your life's ambition is my fleeting whim". Because he only reads social cues about how well his audience are adhering to the image he's trying to project, he only became self-aware when he realised that his audience could see behind the curtain. He then clumsily flipped to the polar opposite "buying a house is a noble act of a magnificent being" bit while still trying to sneak in a "yeah but I can buy many houses" undertone.
