Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to another edition of the Android News Byte.
Today, I wanted to talk about the death of Chromecast and where Google plans to go from here.

This week, it was revealed that Google is ending production of its Chromecast line.
After 11 years and over 100 million units shipped, the company has decided to move on from the affordable streaming device ecosystem.

Google has said that they believe the market is in a place where its competitors are finally making inexpensive and reliable hardware that fill this demand. With mention of Walmart's Onn brand, as well as Amazon and Roku devices that also fall into this category.

So the company has decided to focus on more high-end devices and it was said that the NVIDIA Shield was their "gold tier price point" as well as "gold tier performance" target that they wanted to hit.

google tv streamer specs
Enter the Google TV Streamer.
A product that I have previously covered here on the Android News Byte.
But at the time, there were only rumors about it.
Today, the company has officially announced the device, given us its specs, feature list, and confirmed it will be available to purchase in late September for just under $100.

We have learned the Google TV Streamer will be equipped with the MediaTek MT8696 chipset
Which is the same processor used in the 2021 Amazon Fire TV Stick Max.
And that chip is very similar to what Amazon chose to go into the 2023 model as well.

This new hardware will have 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, doubling the hardware that Amazon used in the Fire TV Stick 4K Max
But we're also learning that the Google TV Streamer will only have a WiFi 5 module, instead of WiFi 6 that so many people were hoping for.

At least there's going to be a gigabit ethernet port on the back, though.
We've seen confirmation that it will support 4K video playback, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR+, however it will not have support for DTS.
Something that I know a lot of home theater enthusiasts are sad to learn.

conclusion
While the Chromecast line was meant to be basic and affordable, the Google TV Streamer looks to capture those who want a bit more.
The company hopes integration of its Gemini AI will allow more people to use voice-based interactions that will pull data from all sorts of online sources.

Although many are already on the fence due to the lack of DTS support, and out of fear that Google will end up moving on to another product if sales of the Google TV Streamer doesn't blow past expectation after a year on the market.

Let me know what you think down in the comments section below.
Are you impressed with what Google has announced here. . .or are you happy with the streaming set-top box that you already have?
