Calculate Linux 15.17 Review

Calculate Linux 15.17 Review. I have said for a number of years that Calculate was the best way to get your feet wet with Gentoo. I STILL DO! Calculate offers an easy to install stage4 setup that pretty much mirrors the LiveDVD. It uses all the same mechanics as Gentoo, and even I learned a few things just trying out this version.

Never tried Gentoo although I've been aware of it for so long. So I've downloaded Calculate ready to install it on my laptop tonight.

Agree. Calculate Linux is the best way to learn about the Gentoo mechanics. I worked with CL a whole year in 2011. before that I had Archlinux 2 years and jumped to Gentoo after the CL experience. Although it's very time consuming if you want to install, configure and maintain it, I never gave up Gentoo since then :-)

Hya Das...good to see you..

My goodness, as much as nice was your review just as *tricky* this distro I felt it was. Before anything else, can I just say you must have the patience of a saint trying this distro. If unity Ubuntu is the exemplar of the bog-standard/plain distro, this Calculate distro is right the complete opposite end of the spectrum. It seems to be the distro that wants you to tinker away with it because not much, right from installation, just functions. It's like working on a jigsaw puzzle, which is fine, if you feel like it & are up for it. I can't deny it, I think (at least some times) there's certain "charm", convenience to a bog-standard Linux distro. Calculate seems to be light years away from that.

Thanks for the review Das, as always your reviews are very good. :)

Great review. I've always wanted to try gentoo, but i've never had the time and i'm the kind of guy that wants the base system up and running asap, so i'm definitely trying this one.

Hi Das. As far as I know in order to have Calculate not using binaries and have it compile everything, you need to uncomment the "FEATURES=-getbinpkg" in the make.conf. You would, of course, need to set all the other appropriate options for compiling as in Gentoo. I am not sure if you need to change the selected profile list as well. Probably doing so you will in fact switch to pure Gentoo without the Calculate repos and added features (console, etc.)
And as always, superb job. You are one of the best Linux guys on Youtube (together with Linux4UnMe) :-)

Hello DasGregor,

You are fantastic and very informative in general but also in small details, I love the way you approach difficulties and also that you show/tell what the problems might / could be and what to do about them ! thank you so much for your videos, I absolutely love them all. You are a kind and patient person.
I was wondering, do you have any thoughts about Sabayon Linux (also gentoo based) ? I don't exactly know if you also can switch in Sabayon from pre-packaged binaries to fully or partially compiling from source. Does it work the same as in Calculate Linux ?
Anyway, thank you very much for your videos and looking forward to new videos from you, thank you :-)

Best tip in the video: uncomment --jobs=1"
Thank you for this, I was desperate to fix the hiding of my compilation.
Note that the "extra time" is due to the scrolling speed of your terminal emulator. If you switch tabs to an inactive terminal, the speed of compilation increases dramatically, as the terminal emulator no longer needs to spit the output in realtime.

Juts wondering if you could do a video with the latest Calculate build and have a step by step conversion to Gentoo? Using Gentoo compiling ports etc.

first time I installed Gento I did a stage 1 cause I was stupid and didn't know about speeding up the process with stage 3. 56k took forever.

I used to keep my burned DVDs for years and every now & then I'd find a use for them. I've never liked installing via USB.

I love gentoo but would really hesitate to deploy a full desktop interface on top of it, simply because of the time it potentially consumes. Compiling gcc once or twice a month is ok because I might need it and gentoo definitely needs it. But compiling anything xorg related more than once a year sounds obsessive. GUI is about doing the same thing the same way again and again. Not really in line with the thinking behind a rolling-release. I would prefer and suggest an average user to buy a $200 device and install any GUI heavy linux distro on it to serve as a "browser box". And leave the gentoo install with CLI. For someone into this type of computing $200 should be a reasonable trade-off to avoid periodically wrestling with driver support.
