With ETFs you lower your portfolio risk without lowering the returns; this is the safest and the best way to invest long-term. Investing into stocks definitely more fun, but also way more risky as not a lot of people can predict accurately what is going to happen with this or that stock.. so you sort of relying on your judgments or other people's advice.
Long-haul investors will want to consider a fund's management expense ratio, as fees are directly predictive of returns in a very simple way—the higher the fees, the lower the returns.
Picking the right ETF is very important and you gotta look not only at fees but also overall returns and the strategy behind the ETF. I want to cover the best 5 vanguard ETFs on Canadian Stock Market and Vanguard being the leader in the ETF world. It is important to know what we're dealing with. Vanguard has a total 42 of ETFs on TSX. I chose 5 best Vanguard Index Funds that every investor might consider as staple foundation for their portfolio.
1. S&P500 ETF - VFV.TO or VSP.TO (CAD hedged)
2. Canada All Cap ETF - VCN.TO
3. US Total Market ETF - VUN.TO or VUS.TO (CAD hedged)
4. International Equity VIU.TO or VIE.TO (CAD hedged)
5. All-in-one Full Equity ETF - VEQT.TO
Of course Vanguard is not the only ETF Provider out there, but it is the largest one, hence will stay around for a long time, as ETFs sometimes can be liquidated (or closed) which is not the end of the world.. the fund will just buy out all your shares.. but still not something you want to deal with.. so better to stay with the known and well established ETFs.. All the Vanguard ETFs we talked about today have grade A (the highest). Also, Vanguard ETFs are known for their low fees.
Cheers,
Alex
