•A thesis statement is an opinion. True or false?
•Evidence is usually a ________.
•The main idea is stated in the ______ and _______ paragraphs.
•What is a run-on sentence?
•What is parallel structure? Can you give an example?
In an essay, such as the ones you will have to write in the Extended Response, you will need to have an introduction, a few body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction states your argument and talks about how you will support your argument is a general way. The body paragraphs (more than one) give evidence and detail as to why you have taken the position that you have. You should have an outline and refer back to that as you are writing the body paragraphs. The conclusion restates the main idea (the thesis statement). The conclusion should also be able to state why this is important.
Outline
An outline (or an idea map) are both good ideas for the Extended Response. The Extended Response involves reading a passage, and then responding to it with your opinion. Your response should include a thesis statement and then evidence to back up your opinion. An outline is what we recommend in that it helps to organize your paragraphs and the main ideas as well as the supporting details. Watch the video for an example outline.
Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is an opinion that will later be backed up by facts. It should not contain facts in and of itself, though.
Main Idea and Evidence
The main idea is stated in the first and last paragraphs. However, each paragraph should have one main idea of its own, have a topic sentence, and support the thesis statement.
Evidence is usually a fact or some type of data. 77% of those polled favored online elections is evidence for the opinion that we should legalize online balloting in the general election.
Run-on Sentences and Parallel Structure
A run-on is a sentence has two or more independent clauses (i.e. complete sentences) without an appropriate conjunction or mark of punctuation. This could be written, "First we went to the movies then we went to dinner." This is a run-on sentence and needs a period between the words “movies” and “then.”
Parallel structure means that the pattern of words is the same. Parallel structure almost always involves a list of some kind. “I like hiking, biking, and swimming.” Notice how the words all end in –ing? That’s parallel structure.
