The Boss DS-1 is one of the most popular guitar pedals ever sold, and for good reason. It's incredibly versatile and has been used by countless artists on more famous recordings that you can think of. What Is The DS-1 Sound? Thanks to Josh Scott of JHS Pedals for making this episode possible.

holy shit its cool to hear him break out of his typical blues-rock sound. that opening jam was dope.

Intro was smokin Rhett. Taking me back to gigging and recording in the late 80s and early 90s in the alternative rock genre, Small clubs, mosh pits, sonic youth, etc. You would have been thoroughly entertained from the stage if you unleashed that riff on the crowd, I loved listening to new/live music in my 20s, but it’s channels like this that sustains me, taking the time and energy to craft incredible pieces of music consistently is so impressive and appreciated. Well done once again Rhett.

That opening jam is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever heard Rhett play.

I think my favorite thing about the DS-1 (aside from the tones) is that they are abundant and affordable on the used market. Pretty much every kid who even thought about trying guitar got one to go along with their Squier/Epiphone and cheap little practice amp before giving up a couple months later. Just like Jimmie Moore, “I’m reaping all the benefits…”

Dad bought me a DS-1 in spring of ‘78 as my birthday present so I could play rock through my practice amp. This is ‘78 and amps only distorted when they were cranked! I learned 100s of songs in my bedroom and could dial in so many sounds as you found out Rhett.
Flipped a lot of gear but that DS-1 is still going!
I got the waza version and it is very good enough to keep the original at home now.

This opening track is soooo much better than the typical blues stuff I hear on most channels like this (including this one a lot of time) really cool stuff

I'm always so impressed by how great these videos have become. Rhett is constantly raising the bar.

I was completely blown away by the opening tune. I always associated Rhett with your standard blues rock for some reason, but that opening was insane! Maybe he should explore this new sound a bit more. It is much more interesting and original!

It's great to see this DS-1 still in use because I bought one back when I started playing back in '79 and it's still going, and so am I. Love it 😀

When this video came out, it put me over the edge and convinced me to get a DS-1. Two years later and I am still excited to play through it. At first, I would turn it on and off and now it just stays on all the time. I love it. Thanks dude.

Tubescreamer fan here, but I do enjoy your disdain for it and exploring other pedals! lol

I bought this pedal back off buddy in high school in 2004. It is still used to this day. Amazing sound. Cheers!

Also a Tube Screamer or SD-1 into a DS-1 as a boost is a great sound!

The DS-1 was my first pedal back in 1981...I still have it! Great pedal!

The DS-1 is an outstanding pedal. I always recommend that as a first pedal for newcomers. So easy to dial in a decent tone from warm blues overdrive to heavy metal distortion. And it's inexpensive to boot!

Joe Satriani actually used the DS1 as a catch-all distortion sound for both rhythm and lead. From Surfing to Crystal Planet he played his Marshall Jubilee super clean with the DS1 in front taking the role of an always on distortion bringer.

LOL, Rhett's vendetta against the Tubescreamer continues. Again, excellent cinematography on introducing each version.

Just dusted off and plugged in my old DS-1, after watching this. Fell in love all over again. Thanks!
