The Celebrities Who Were Spies

The Curious Case of Captain Robert Campbell

In this video:

Jack Kirby was one of the principle minds and artists behind some of the best known comic characters in history, including, among many others, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, X-Men, and Captain America. Few people realise, though, that like his most patriotic creation, Kirby spent a good portion of WW2 fighting the Nazis as well, though never managing to duplicate Captain America’s feat of punching Hitler in the face.

Jack "King" Kirby is a legend! Thanks for the video. You left out one of my favorite stories about him, where several members of the American Nazi party showed up at the studio to start a fight, and Kirby actually went outside to face them, and they got scared and immediately left. But there was some stuff here I did not know, which is always cool.

Growing up, reading comic books would have gotten me beat up so I read them in secret. As such, I was shocked when my father who denounced all comic books had a small stash of them that he collected during his time in the Pacific. When I asked about them he told me that war was the one place where seeing comic books would make grown men cry since it was very much a taste of home. He was very fond of Captain America and I guess his love of the character rubbed off on me.

That's one huge thing people don't realise about WW2.. most of the interactions countries had with Germany didn't result in gun fire. In fact that usually never occurs to them to just murder someone in cold blood just because they're on the other side.. instead they would call each other names and throw a rock and laugh at them and then move on. It's really fascinating but not surprising at all since they were just drafted humans and that's human nature under such circumstances. Then there's the amount of soldiers who never aimed to murder people. Same thing can be seen as far back as muskets, they even did tests to find this out at the time. So, I'm glad this was mentioned here to educate some people on that.

I recommend people check out "Lindybeige" on youtube is a great channel.

TIFO,

What a way to bring such a personal and deep view to WW2. You did in such a way that brought homage to the way Marvel, through Kirby and others, were able to get to the human part of their characters.

Good job

I have been a huge comic book fan all my life and I have a few books on drawing by Jack Kirby. I knew he was a WWII soldier but I did not know all those interesting stories about his exploits. Thank you for sharing that with us. The gentleman is a true American hero!

Simon I think this was my favorite episode! I never knew any of this. It was so interesting from the perspective of both the war and Jack Kirby! Please keep making videos like this!

Grown men calling each others mums names in heated battle, that actually made me laugh out loud and filled in the blanks for me on why people do that online too in similar games.
