This Animation video is all about how a Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder Works!
It is called Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder Because Load is carried only during the single forward stroke and the return stroke is idle.
Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder is one of the hydraulic cylinder types, in this cylinder there is a single port through which hydraulic fluid enters and pushes the piston against a spring in order to achieve the desired working force during forward stroke.
The Spring is used here to complete the Return Stroke, means during the forward stroke when the spring is compressed, the same compression force pushes the piston back to its initial position and the hydraulic fluid comes out from the same port through which it has entered.
This is how a Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinder Works, Do watch this animation to understand it more clearly.

Being a single inlet, does the air on the other side of cylinder compress, cause resistance and weaken the power from the hydraulic side ?
