I made a gallium spoon once, and since my coworker had just made new coffee, I poured myself a cup and put the spoon in and began to stir. After the spoon had begun to melt, I took it out and shouted "What the fuck Josh, how hot is this coffee? Why the hell would you make it so hot? Are you trying to make me FUCKIN DIE when I drink it?"
Needless to say, he was very confused, and I'd say that overall it was a success.

So if I used this spoon in the tropics where daytime temps are over 30degC, the spoon would simply melt every day and solidify every night?

Just reading the book "The Disappearing Spoon" by Sam Kean, all about the periodic table but written so well that even I am entertained by chemistry and physics. He describes this joke in one of the early chapters.

Fuller Brush Man did that, he showed a demo how a brush handle can be turned into a stabbing weapon and after it was done put the brush back in boiling water to retain it molded shape.

@132456ish: when it's molten, it still is a metal. Metal can be in a solid, liquid and even gaseous form depending on temperature. it melts at 30C/86F, and boils at 2204C/4000F.

a gallium spoon can be bent, but if it's done too fast it will break like glass. If you'd drop a gallium spoon, it will break apart into shards

Oh that's really cool. Didn't know much about the properties of gallium. That's really fun watching it melt. It almost looks like Mercury in its melted form, but unlike it, its not toxic XD. Thanks for sharing your demonstration. I'm wondering considering you might know on this subject more than I. What purposes can gallium be used for?
