Lyrics:

Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
Eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Oh, where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
Oh, oh, where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?
And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Grey clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
If you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh
Eh-eh-oh, eh-oh

This is a suprisingly good depression song especially the "but if you close your eyes does it almost feel like nothing changed at all" and "how am i gonna be an optimist about this?" Thats just so powerful

Every time this song plays on a road-trip, everything goes wrong in a funny way for some reason. (From my experience)

I've never listened to this song when I was younger, but for some reason it still feels nostalgic to me. Maybe I did hear this when I was younger and I just don't remember

This song played many times as my husbnd and I drove out of state while I was 9 months pregnant to move so we could start a new life. He just passed and whenever i hear this it brings me back to that happy rime. RIP David.

“If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?”
That hit hard.

First time I heard this song I felt a good energy and I thought "oh this is a happy song". Now I know the lyric is a reference to the italian city of Pompei which was devasted by Vesuvius Volcano. I mean, how they could create a "happy song" about a tragedy? That's awesome. I liked it.

This song was my middle school anthem when it released ..one of my favorite songs of all time. I’ve been to two Bastille concerts now, and they are just as great live as the studio recordings!

Love the name and how this is actually about the great city of Pompeii... and the volcano that swept through it and the grey clouds ⛅️

I’m going into my senior year, I can’t believe I finally made it. It makes me sad about all the hardships I overcame by myself. These songs that were created during the early 2000s are so nostalgic. These songs are what made me, me. Also made people of generations that grew up with these masterpieces. Thank you Bastille for creating such a memorable song for many people around the globe. ❤

The NOSTALGIA I get when I listen to this is crazy. It reminds me of when I didn’t have to care about my future. Have a great day everyone! :D

I haven't listened to this song in a bit, and yet large parts of the song are stuck in my head. This reminds me of 5 year-old me in the backseat of my moms car on a summer morning, carefree and singing. So nostalgic 💗💗

A song has no business bringing me so much joy and so much pain at the same time.

This song just feels nostalgic. I can remember hearing this on the radio in my mom’s car, because I was allowed to change the station to whatever I want, unlike in my dad’s car. How many times of listened to guns and roses, classical music, and imagine dragons in that car

I would honestly listen to this song over and over again till I go back to being a kid all over again being dropped at Elementary school back in Grade 5 was my best year and time ever hearing this every morning on the school bus and summer off in 2014 going to day camp and other places.
