Fastest, slow speed diesel engined cargo ship ever engines running

Built in 1972 Selandia briefly held the record as the fastest cargo ship in the world until the SL-7s debuted.
3 B&W 84K engines center 12cyl wing engines 9cyl made 85,000 hp through 3 propellors and shafts. a feat I don’t believe was ever attempted again except with her sister Jutlandia. These vessels could easily cruise at 30kts
This was my first ship after the maritime academy where I only had ever seen steam propulsion. It was impressive! Currently USNS Gilliland I sailed on her extensively during operation Iraqi Feedom and Enduring Freedom in 2003. We regularly cruised at 27kts in winter seas in the North Atlantic where the turbochargers where barely loaded

I know this isn’t the best video I lost my video of all 3 engines on a power run. Had a friend send me these clips he had and I pieced them together. I wouldn’t have kept the sloppy valve lash or indicator blowing

You could crack walnuts with that valve lash

Holy valve lash …. You don’t need a feeler gauge you need a tape measure

"Valve lash? Not a problem, just put in an extra set of earplugs!" I enjoyed the video. Thank you.

A valve lash adjustment is certainly in order :)

I was second engineer on Selandia in 1990. It is correct you can, and we did, adjust the valve clearence with the engine running slow speed. The funny thing is, that all 3ea. Engines (1 with 12 and 2 with 9 cylinders) had hydraulic valve lash arrangements below the rod, but they required some new seals quite often.

For god sake sailors.... Adjust the rocker...1/2 inch gap might be a bit wide..I am sad now and will likely lose sleep over the lack of

0:30 "Dammit where is my wrech???" That excess lash. Its the mechanics equivalent of a crooked picture. I'd be constantly wanting to adjust it as I walk by.

Enough room to slip in a roll of toy-pistol caps...😆

Sailed on her as Chief Engineer, bringing her out of layup in the late teens.
We did indeed complete a power trial at 27 knots - though afterword things did not go well.
These were clearly really something back in the day.

I know marine diesels are big but damn, lash those rockers, when you hear them from 5ft away in an engine room, way too much clearance.

This engine room with main engines Burmeister & Wain (? cylinders in line) : for me, it was the « good old time » . Need exhaust valve adjustment : don’t worry, reduce the rpm around 50 rpm, take 1 big hammer + 2 spanners + 3 guys, do it and put back the lever on Full.
You can’t do that anymore with a 18 cylinders Wartsila (or MAN) 4 stroke engine, 30000Hp.

Couldn’t decide on a valve lash measurement so just used them all. That 15mm was as ridiculous as the one without any.

Hell with a push rod that long, you'd better have some clearance in there when everything is cold!

, ,, don't worry about the valve lash, at my age I only learn from mistakes . Mine and others, ,, !

Sounds like the screw machine shop I worked in years ago.

Which one of these is not like the others? 😯

yes..there is a lash issue..but the down stroke of the lifter/follower/push rod is even more pronounced like the lifter/follower is being munched..
