【Pls look at the top comment first】It's time to recommend British pride Magnum, the 1980s memories for every aor lover. The age-old founding history of Magnum seems to be far away because for the majority among aor fandom, Magnum is the icon who performed actively during 1980s. Their most significant early success was "Chase The Dragon" in 1982, which reached number 17 in the UK Albums Chart. Compared to many other old-school aor releases coming out in the early 1980s, Magnum's "Chase The Dragon" is enriched with glorious and splendid arrangements and layered backing vocals, inspiring and heartstirring. But today, I want to share the masterpiece from "Vigilante (1986)", which represented Magnum's further move towards the mainstream. I know this unicorn on the album cover is impressive as Magnum's icon and their 1980s symbol.
Since "Vigilante", their sixth studio album released by Polydor, Magnum changed to a more commercial direction. Produced by David Richards and Queen drummer Roger Taylor, the band's sound stepped towards that of 1980s Queen, with keyboards much higher in the mix than guitar. The album was recorded at Queen's famous Mountain Studios in Montreux. Three singles were released to promote the album, "Lonely Night", "Midnight (You Won't Be Sleeping)" and "When the World Comes Down". I select "Lonely Night" to upload because once I saw this music video, it truly attracted me. I mean the scenes from the video covering typical and nostalgic 1980s features with the very interesting and intriguing story lines. Of course its melodious tunes are always the key points for me to appeciate such a masterpiece.
"Lonely Night", "Need a Lot of Love", "Midnight (You Won't Be Sleeping)" and "Vigilante" laid the groundwork for the group to reach their commercial and creative peak on their follow-up UK Top 5 album "Wings Of Heaven". As we know, "Wings Of Heaven (1988)" is always considered as the peak of Magnum with more familiar sounds for fans, making Magnum a real worldwide famous melodic rock band. Anyway, the mid 1980s witnessed the transition periods of mang bands like Magnum. During the mid 1980s, many artists especially those who started music careers since 1970s, reached the top part of the melodic rock explosion and firstly won commercial success, which lasted until the early 1990s as we call the golden era. So today, to review these albums coming out during the past golden era means the never-fading best music taste. Good news that Magnum is a prolific band who never stops rocking in the past few decades. In the recent few years, one album after another have come out successively. So speaking of the permanent union, Magnum must be the one that always stands still by Bob Catley and Tony Clarkin.
