The Transfagarasan Highway, often referred to as Ceausescu's Folly, is a twisting, winding road through Romania's Carpathian mountains. Built for military reasons during the Communist period, the road is still maintained, though it is only open during summer (starting around mid-June and ending with the first snows, generally in October). It is the most scenic route between the Romanian capital of Bucharest, and Sibiu in Transylvania. At the top of the pass through the mountains is a glacial lake, which makes for an ideal spot to enjoy refreshments and stunning views. The creators of the hit British TV show Top Gear were so impressed with the road when they drove it in 2009, that they dubbed it the best road in the world. See it for yourself via a tour of Romania with us.
