This song is written in honor of the Zapatista revolutionaries in Mexico, De La Rocha has always been a huge supporter!

Fun fact: Tom Morello gets the guitar sound on this song (what you hear at the very beginning) by raking an allen wrench against the coils of his A string (and E string in the chorus). It's one of the simplest guitar rhythms ever if you understand what he's doing, but it sounds so badass.

“Never forget that the whip snapped your back, your spine cracked for tobacco, I’m the Marlboro man.”
...damn.

Zack de la Rocha never gets the due he deserves as one of the best MCs to ever pick up a microphone. Some of the shit he put on paper is so far above everybody else that was doing it at the same time it's hard to quantify. He was so prescient. Shit, you can take all the backing instruments out and his vocals stand as pure poetry. He was incredible. And that's leaving out his inimitable delivery, breath control, and technical ability as an MC. You have to put him with the Biggies and the Pacs and DOOM and NaS and Wayne and Kendrick.

That opening verse is so densely packed with meaning, it's amazing.

What I love about rage is that they dont bother to be quiet or polite. The raw energy resonates with all people whether they like it or not.
Then through the lyrics the listener is invited to learn the stories of other people. It's powerful in ways that other entertainers are afraid to go. it will always make them refreshing despite how time passes.

Zack is such a king. I only started listening to RATM recently (like last week) and I’m blown away by their energy, their sound, and their dedication to antiracism, anti imperialism, anti capitalism, and anti fascism. I was truly missing out

I love how Jamel’s face just lit up when Tom starts the opening riff haha! I had the same reaction when I heard this song for the first time! Evil Empire lived in my Sony Walkman for months back in 1996, before my brother realized I took it from him.

First show I saw...Lollapalooza 1993. They were the best performers and made the biggest impact on me. I'd never heard them before that day...and I've never looked back. I love them and their message. ✊

The band was just ferocious live when I first saw them in '92. I had their first album (CD) playing in my car for 6 months straight. Nobody else sounded like that and with Public Enemy style lyrics to boot. I'm so grateful to be GenX. My generation was exposed to great-great musical artists from a variety of genres for 2+ decades. Good times.

De la Rocha is Mexican-American, his grandfather was part of the Zapatista revolutionaries from Sinaloa Mexico, this is a song dedicated to the people of the sun, Maya, Mexicas (mostly native Americans and Mexicans who are also part native american)

The late 80's-mid 90's was such a big time for socially aware music. Rap was one of the strongest fronts of it. RATM, NWA, Public Enemy, Even Dr Dre and Snoop. Everyone was talking about getting screwed by the government and abused by the cops. On the other side, rock and metal was talking about the dangers of politics and war, drugs, and mental illness, especially the stuff coming out of Seattle.

Now we have Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd (whatever that's supposed to be).

"Way back then"... "How long ago?" Dude, you're making me feel OLD! Good reaction, as always. ;)

I love these reactions man. It's so fun to see someone discovering and appreciating things I've loved for a long time from a new and fresh perspective. So dope.

Thank you for your appreciation of Rage. This music means so much to people on so many different levels. Some enjoy it for the message and lyrics, others listen for the actual style of music and original transitions. Most listen simply because they can hear someone who is as pissed off as they are and relate. Bands like Rage and Pantera are outlets / therapy for people. Thank you for listening with an open mind and expressing your own appreciation for the art. This style of music is unlike any other, especially to those who grew up on it such as myself. I discovered it by accident but loved it because I needed it. Thank you again.

"Some speak the sounds but speak in silent voices
Like the radio is silent though it fills the air with noises" - Zack, 'Fistful of Steel'
