Mann HU 926/4 filter not fitting in 2006 M3 oil filter housing

This filter does not even fit past the opening to enter the oil filter housing on my 2006 M3. Seems like the center opening it too small and the filter overall it too tall.

The application listing says it fits. The factory bmw filter does have a slightly larger center opening and the gasket length is not as long. May be a production issue.
