This is a needed video, where you have gone out and compared different methods for PDF annotations rather than just one way, even though you have your preferred way. Thanks.

Thanks, Danny. It's great adding a simple workflow to Obsidian for those with basic needs. Managing Zotero integration isn't for the faint of heart.

The plugins are the biggest strength and the biggest weakness of Obsidian. Once their developer gets tired of updating them, they soon become useless after a few Obsidian releases. So I'm trying to rely on as few plugins as possible.

I think in a recent Obsidian update, it again got a little bit better, now you can do right-click and it will say 'Copy as quote', which copies the text with the link in a good looking format

My problem with zotero a few days ago was, that I couldn't just draw in my pdf. I needed to draw arrows and add text to the pdf directly as annotating. Since zotero didn't deliver that I had to fully ditch it sadly.

Nice, necessary overview! It's a pity Obsidian-annotator is no longer maintained as I think it has a great base for new improvements. I'm currently working on a program to better universally sync annotations across different apps like Zotero and Koreader, and I plan to do so with zotero to for (hopefully) more seamless syncing of annotations that the current Zotero integration plugin provides.

i like the new pdf viewer. that said i don't use annotations and highlighting. i just directly copy it out into a literature about the pdf with headers for each section or directly into the subject note the pdf is talking about. sure it seems to be slower than just highlighting but i find the additional work of exporting and then sorting/using the highlights more work than just to directly put it where it can sit until i edit it.
that said i don't really work with pdfs yet and it is likely a process that will change in the future when i have more than a few pdfs.
i still would love a video about how to actually find good technical pdfs about a subject that are still understandable without 5 years of university knowledge. sure the bing ai is a big help but i often find that i don't know if what i found is what i need or not. the problems of wanting to learn new subjects without having to pay for 50-100€ books that need a teacher to understand...

Curious if you tried using excalidraw for PDF annotations and what you thought? Or was that not worth comparing?

Dear Danny, It has been a while since this video. I hope you will make a new one on how you handle PDFs in 2024.

Does Zotero include annotations made in other pdf readers?

What I did not follow here is how Zotero updates highlights synced automatically.
Don’t you always have to “add notes from annotations”?

This is really cool if you want to stay in Obsidian for everything, but to be honest I think Readwise Reader just does a much better job of all of this.
