But how do you know you're right? The Objective Theory of History

In the post-truth age, how can you know what's true or false? Can we get to the truth? Is everything fake news and propaganda? How do we tell what is a lie? Is history even possible? Well, under the current subjectivist theory of history, the only answer is 'no'. History does not work... But we're going to change that today.

ABOUT TIK 📝

History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.

History teacher here, its good to hear your in-depth analysis on this nuanced subject. Thank you for your work, as it bleeds into my classroom. I have felt since university that the historical method is a cousin to the scientific method. Empirical evidence backed by logical, rational thought.

I was so miserable and hated the world before Objectivism clarified how reality works and how to navigate through it (how to properly THINK). I have no doubt that an Objectivist mindset will bring more joy in your pursuit of great historical videos, as it made the pursuit of my own goals in life infinitely more enjoyable and meaningful. Since you are relatively new to Objectivism, there's so much more to learn, but doing so will unpack so much joy as the world makes logical sense and you feel more confident that you can, and deserve, to handle it.

"There are no absolutes" is an absolute statement. "There's no such thing as truth" is a claim to truth.

We’re lucky to live in the internet age, without YouTube and these videos a lot of us would never even consider these important ideas and trends.

I loved it when you refused to "stick to tanks", and the resulting in depth analysis of politics and economics. Going down into the foundations, in philosophy are also fantastic.

I have been a student of history my whole life. I have always maintained that you can only use objective truth to verify events and the word games used by modern politicians, reporters, and of late just about everyone creates "my truth" arguments. While you may learn different lessons from the truth, there is only one truth. Thanks for the video.

As Leonard Peikoff said, “Knowledge is contextual.”

I enjoyed the video! It felt like another objectivist lecture (and that is a good thing).

Finally found what I was trying to formulate for the entirety of my academic life. Highly appreciate your video.

Understanding that our conception of reality is valid based on our logical analyse of the evidence given to us (it being right or wrong is another thing), is what also lead me to get out of the subjectivism rabbit hole of just being unable to find any truth. However beforehand I didn’t know what to really call it, so I appreciate this video for explaining it in a bit more detail and creating a new catchphrase for the channel. One of the best videos I think you’ve produced Tik/Lewis.

I don't have much to add other than thank you for this, and for introducing Mises to me in one of your earlier videos.
I hope you continue to sprinkle your channel with "banks" (epistemology, economics and other things upstream from "tanks"), since the world is so starved of coherent philosophy right now. Peikoff's Intro to Western Philosophy is extremely valuable and bringing attention to that alone makes this an important video.

I’ve always interpreted “history lies in the heart of the debate” that it means trying to interpret the contradictions in the sources and as you say trying to integrate, understand interpret them as much as possible. Like a debate between sources. Not necessarily with a debate with another person who may not be using valid evidence.
Thanks for this video!

Many years ago, when Rush Limbaugh (American talk radio host, pioneer of modern conservative talk format) was rising, it was a common critique of him that he, "thinks he's right about everything".

It got me thinking about the nature of opinion. Ultimately I reasoned that everyone should think they are always right. This is due to it being opinion, but that if some new research, or debate convinces you that you are wrong, it's natural for you to change your opinion and thus be right again.

So we should have confidence in our opinion, but always be willing to challenge our opinions with other ideas and facts that challenge or change that opinion.

I don't think there is settlement here TIK, but what there is, is paradigm rejection, meaning if someone acknowledges a certain position you can't really engage in a conversation anymore. There are five or six arguments that you kind of have to ignore to continue having a conversation but don't really have a refutation to speak of. I call them the Rejected Irrefutables. The Big 3 are as follows: Solipsism, Nihilism and Fatalism. They and their derivatives aren't necessarily wrong, but they break the game we're playing here, and some of us happen to like the game and would like it to continue.

I don't know if this means anything, but I've been on the internet for over 30 years, and this is one of those videos that I believe that every single person should watch! Great job

The old school way to the truth: A logical conclusion supported by verifiable facts and defended in open public debate.
The new school way: You be rayciss if you disagree.

Jay Dyer is great at combatting this topic. Often people will say "there are only subjective truths" or "there are no objective truths" Both statements are making objective claims, instant self refutation.
