Why Heat Is The Only Movie Michael Mann Made TWICE

The Michael Mann movie Heat will forever be considered one of the best action movies ever made. The gritty realism, dedication to detail, and razor sharp dialogue puts Heat above almost every other action movie of the last 30 years. But this wasn't Michael Mann's first attempt at directing this script. Before Heat, Mann released his film LA Takedown, which is basically the same movie. But why did Michael Mann direct the same movie twice?

My aunt rented this film for everybody to watch when i was 13. She was mortified by the violence -at least for a family movie afternoon-, meanwhile i was mesmerized by it, by the sound, the guns, the characters, the plot, the mind blowing scene where the "good" and the "bad" guys shared a cup of coffee (mind blowing for me). She apologized to us a lot while i decided back then it was my favorite movie ever. That decision holds up pretty well today, as i am 40.

The street shootout scene in this movie looked so freakin real man! One of my all time favourite action set piece! It was a work of art!

I had no idea Heat was a remake, it's one of the finest action crime movies in cinema, with excellent cinematography, real character depth, tight action editing sequences, and really top notch direction with a really engaging story.

The scene where Hanna tells his wife's new boyfriend "You can sleep with my wife but you're not gonna watch my television" and then takes the TV only to shove it out the car door is lifted directly from an episode of Crime Story. So Mann was mining a bunch of his past work, making Heat kind of his master's thesis of his entire filmography.

Collateral is so underrated not even a fan of Tom cruise but him and Jamie killed it great movie

This is a prime example to me why they need to remake more bad movies. Seeing how much more time, budget, and experience can improve LA Takedown into Heat bums me out that there's plenty of other great concepts that didn't get the execution down the first time and never will have the chance to live up to their potential.

I saw Heat in the theater with my Dad, Uncle, and cousin, I was twelve. It was then and still is fantastic today. Probably the best Pacino and DeNiro performances outside of The Godfather. The armored car and subsequent bank heists are some of the most visceral, heart pounding moments ever captured on screen outside of war films like Saving Private Ryan. Which is why they are so memorable, because they are happening on city streets where people are just going about their day, when suddenly there’s an unexpected eruption of violence.

I've been arguing for a long time now that bad movies should be remade instead of good ones. Glad to have an example of a success on that front.

Heat is a masterpiece, and yes, the coffee scene is absolutely incredible in terms of acting and tension.
Juste two people sipping a coffee and talking, but this is THE scene.

I've always heard so much about the movie, Heat, but I've never actually seen it. This video convinced me to go ahead and preorder the 4K disc that's coming out soon.

Christopher Nolan made a reference to Heat in The Dark Knight with William Fichtner as he played the Bank Manager and was inspired by Heat. That movie was an inspiration to The Dark Knight. He ordered his cast to watch:
1 Batman Begins (2005)
2 Cat People (1942)
3 A Clockwork Orange (1971)
4 Black Sunday (1977)
5 Stalag 17 (1953)
6 King Kong (1933)
7 Citizen Kane (1941)
8 Heat (1995)

We need a new Michael Mann movie. Ever since Miami Vice he has been an incredible storyteller and has created such deep & fascinating characters.

Grew up watching HEAT when I was a kid and this is a perfect example of how to make a movie the best bank robbery movie ever how did it not get nominated or win any Oscars is beyond me this classic has it all from character development to dialog to action and suspense

Deep dives, compelling loosely true storylines and incredible acting were all key to Heat. Hope Mann can strike gold again with the prequel.

The best heist thriller ever made. L.A. Takedown is a film I came across on YouTube and MAN is it radically different than what we actually got with Heat. My favorite film of all-time, and a true masterpiece of its genre.

It’s interesting that back then translating a tv series to a film allowed Mann to include more character nuance whereas today that’s an element more afforded to tv series due to their extended runtime

One of the best movies ever made, the casting was incredible! So many great actors in this film!

This really shows you how much great actors can effect the overall movie. When Robert dinero and al Pacino are sitting in the coffee shop, before they have even said a word, the tension is so thick that the words actually feel like a relief. And then the words build again. You can feel the self loathing in Pacino's voice when he says "no, my life's a disaster song" or deniro telling him "yeah, we've met face to face, but I will not hesitate".
