Who would have thought that a military-themed toy line by Hasbro would end up fostering G.I. Joe into such a popular culture phenomenon? To begin with, we have had Larry Hama’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, a smash-hit comic book series boasting 155 issues and leading the way for a whole new generation of comic book readers. This was followed by the celebrated Ron Friedman developing a miniseries, one that permanently altered the toy industry and at the same time gave America its most patriotic Saturday morning cartoon.

The actor who voiced Cobra commander also was the voice of Starscream on Transformers

I’m guessing this guy isn’t actually a G.I. Joe fan. He mispronounce “Spentor” throughout the whole video making it hard to watch.
He also left out Scarlett who is without a doubt more of a main character than Beachhead or Sgt. Slaughter. Scarlett is shown as taking on leadership in Revenge of Cobra after it appears Flint was lost in battle.

The thing is, as kids at the time, we knew most if not all the cartoons were advertising toys. Sometimes I'd get a really cool toy and be kind of sad that it didn't have a cartoon.

Great video. One minor correction though. G.I. Joe was actually a weekday cartoon and not just a Saturday morning one.

And it’s about time somebody said that about Duke! I always felt he had a Steve Rogers a.k.a. captain America vibe!

GI Joe was great. It didn't puss around like He-Man where the characters couldn't really directly fight with each other (He-Man was forbidden from using his sword in an offensive manner; he could only block lasers and stuff, not get to slicing Trap-Jaw's good arm) GI Joe gave you gunfights (I know, not good in retrospect) fistfights, swordfights, dogfights, submarine battles. It gave us...violence, but with consequences. I remember the episode where the Lady Jaye took down a Rattler that crashed into some guy's house and nearly killed his family, and how anguished she felt for her role in the accident. This guilt led her to help the schmuck attempt to get some revenge on Cobra and learn a lesson about vengeance. I did think it was ridiculous how every Cobra Viper or grunt managed to jump out of a vehicle before it exploded or magically parachute before being blown to bits. But the show worked; the Joes always took prisoners and with a few exceptions, treated them humanely (looking at you Gung Ho)

Gi Joe. When I think of 80s cartoons, I think of G.I. Joe the cartoon.
A cartoon I kinda like, far more than the Transformers G1 cartoon.

It was like Justice League Unlimited, Star Wars The Clone Wars, or Avengers: Earth Mightest Hero, before they even existed.

GI Joe definitely part of my childhood growing up in the '80s I freaking love the cartoon and the action figures even if the action figures broke like nothing you have to worry about the rubber bands breaking the thumbs the hands and don't get me started when they get loose but still I freaking love the '80s yo Joe.

"The good news is Henry Golding returns as Snake Eyes." - no, that is not good news. Don't get me wrong, he's a fine actor, but I'd rather they be faithful to the source material, specifically the Marvel comics.
