How To: Installing A Motherboard

Kevin here on behalf of Simple Tech Reviews doing another How To video on installing our MSI motherboard into a computer case. A few steps to follow but a fairly simple process. Install the I/O shield plate first into the case, clear out any wires that are in the way, screw in the motherboard standoffs into the case and use the appropriate amount for your motherboard, then slide the motherboard into the case and bolt it down using the screws. Please remember to like, comment, and subscribe to our channel! Thanks for watching!

We are total amateurs, but we could not fail to see that you are beautifully grounded (few people seem to care about this these days). At the same time you are wearing a modern electrostatic carpet as your jacket :) :) ... Is it not a risk factor? We are trying to follow your instructions, but opt for no sleeves at all (just to be safe)

Thank you so much. I just got a new desktop with a micro atx motherboard, and I had no idea how to install it or the io shield. Thank you!

I'm gonna give some constructive feedback. The installation of the motherboard was great! Everything there was on point. My main concern was how you were grounding yourself with the anti-static strap. At least you have one, but there's no point for it if you aren't using it properly.

The paint on the case does NOT conduct electricity! Clipping to the painted case will not ground you. There are, however, two ways you can properly ground yourself with the pc. 1st, you want to make sure the power supply is plugged into the wall. Take an unpainted screw, and screw it into the power supply on the back of the case. After you've screwed it in, partially remove the screw and place your anti-static strap clip on that screw. This allows the static electricity to travel from you, through the strap, into the power supply, and out to the ground in the wall. Connecting it to a painted surface will not discharge the static because the paint doesn't conduct electricity. The second option, if you don't have an anti-static strap, is to simply put your hand on the power supply. The static buildup will travel through your hand, into the power supply and out the ground to the wall.

You're doing a great job with the motherboard installation, but if you're going to be giving instructions to other people who are less experienced, I think you should make sure you are discharging your static buildup properly so those people can learn the proper method from your videos.

I'm having trouble putting the motherboard in because the prongs on the IO shield is just not letting it slide. I have watched videos and none have really helped. Hopefully you can get back to me thanks!

I have standoff screws and panhead screws. I wasn't sure which I needed. Will panhead screws be fine to screw in the motherboard? I know standoff is for mounting at the bottom.

Outstanding Review... Thank you so much to the kind host for clarifying how Standoffs are used and placed into the case, to hold a new motherboard during a fresh build. I'd been searching for a good video that clearly showed every step, and this was by far one of the best reviews.

Ps. I am going to assume that the Brass Standoffs came with your case... But that the motherboard screws used to screw in the motherboard into the standoffs, must obviously come with the motherboard itself. I would greatly appreciate a confirmation of this. I think they say that usually, standoffs come with a newly purchased case, and the screws used to screw the motherboard from the top (into the brass standoffs) come with the motherboard. Someone kindly confirm my understanding of this.

Thank you
Alexander

You seem to answer to all of your questions! I have an Asus maximus iv extreme but the ventilated bracket which you unscrew and place a video card through it, is touching the motherboard when screwed into place.. Can that short out my motherboard? Because where it touches, it's the first pci-e slot and it is malfunctioning :/

What type of screws do I use to screw the motherboard to the standoffs ?

What about the screws? Do you need certain screws or the paper insulators?

im a little worried. I ordered parts for a pc upgrade just yesterday, motherboard, cpu, ram, hard drive, power supply, ridiculously priced windows 10, and im using the same gpu I have currently and the same case. I know enough about the hardware itself, everything being compatible, how to install a cpu, etc. the case is plenty big and decent ventilation, I have a couple extra fans I can put anywhere, but I dont know about an IO shield. I dont know if the current build thats in this case has one and I dont know if I need one, I just know that it like protects your hardware from electromagnetic radiation? or is that wrong. and I dont know if the holes in there will line up with the motherboard im getting, or if it will even come with standoff screws, or if the screws in my current motherboard are standoff ones or something else. everything will arrive by the end of this week and im pretty sure I have everything I need otherwise

You don't need to ground yourself

Why don't you attach your ground harness to your foot?
