This week DJI released a new firmware update for the Action 2 camera. In this video I tested the overheating times against the old firmware to see if the heat management has been fixed or improved.

Thankfully, I am not having overheating problems (yet) too. I'm enjoying it!

Thanks for your video pal, it helped me to make the desicion to return my action 2. It should have been named "DJI Action 2 minutes"

Amazing little video camera! I haven't experienced any over heating issues, but I only record up to 22 minutes or so!

Hi amigo, bravo. How incredible =))

Maybe overheating is something that cannot be fixed at the moment but good to know there are possible ways to avoid it. I believe this is good with cinematic footages.

Although it's sad that overheating is a hardware problem, I am impressed with the image quality and stabilization from the Action 2.

Dang I was about to purchase one, thank god I saw your review, this is obviously unexpectable. GoPro is still the go to camera then.

It's a good thing for DJI they released the A2 when it's cold, can you imagine that thing in summer ? ^^

What every one is missing in the firmware update is it now actually tells you how long it can run for in the res menu at different resolutions. How are people missing this

Is this a UK/EU version?

Due to law in those countries, DJI has disabled the high temperature setting so I'm pretty sure it would last quite long with High enabled.

Do the same test with the screen module attached. Some sources say heating problems it's not a issue then

Yeah we all know about the overheating issue. But I still think this is a good camera and they made some other improvement with the latest update. Can they fix the overheating, dont think so. Just because of the design and small size. I really like the colors on the action 2, a nice color balance. Thats my opinion. But what I like is that I think dji can build on this design in the future. For my outdoor use I never had any overheating issues with the action 2.

The issue is largely a matter of the laws of physics, with the only way they could make a significant change being some radical improvement in code efficiency, thus making the CPU run slower and generating less heat. We have no way of knowing whether DJI had optimised the code before initial release or not. I would rather hope that they had. So, expecting a significant change in the overheating issue might be in vain. Sure, GoPro did, but it seems to me that they did stuff to their code that they should have done earlier... Anyway, thanks for the testing. And now, out into the Australian summer I go with my Action 2...

IMO I don't think they can reduce the heat. This is hardware issue.

So this is the new "DJI Action Minutes"

Why enable RS for a stationary shot? GoPro's 'fix' disabled such features to reduce the stress on the CPU, and hence reduce heat.
Also why record at 4k120 in a stationary position for so long, that's over 25 mins of slow-mo on a 24fps timeline, which will create a boring video!

GoPro's 'fix' is working around the issue, it's still there just the same. Run it at its same settings as before and it will overheat just as it did before. All they did was create a mode to disable features that produce extra heat. Nothing can magically 'fix' overheating with action cameras, especially when you're pushing the CPU to its limits in such a small and tight frame. Its inevitable. The only way to get rid of it is to create a powerful chip, like the GP2, and limit the camera to using a fraction of its true potential, like only allow 1080p for instance, so you're not pushing GP2 to its limits and creating tons of extra heat doing so! Hence why GoPro simply created a mode that disables some features that are not needed with stationary shots, calling it a

I have been using the Action2 out and about, mounted on my bike, on my chest, etc and have had no overheating issues during 'normal' use at all. I generally stick to 4K 30 or 60fps most of the time with RS enabled. No issues at all with some airflow to help dissipate heat.

I'm not saying the Action 2 is better then the Hero 10 at all - it's just a different breed of camera IMO. But, I do respect DJI for working outside of the box here and coming up with a different design, in a different direction, then the normal matchbox shaped action camera. Their modular system is the best in the market at the moment - and the only main competitor that's as modular is the Insta360 One R.

weel i bought it yesterday, made the firmware updates and dont have heating problems, record in my car, with the heater on, 4k 30fps, and i could record for 20 minutes straight and then i turn off the camera, but it wont overheat, i just stop cause it was a waste of time. i dont know what the hell are this test for. the camera wont overheat, like gopro, unless you let the camera sit inside house were is hot in winter, that just stupid . for that buy a Mirorless

overheating has nothing to do with firmware my friend, and NO nothing changed since i update my camera

The most funny thing about all those action cameras (osmo action 1/2, all gopros with hero9 included, etc.) is the fact that 4K is only a fake, a gimmick. With 12MP (4000x3000px) sensor, EIS, processor and optics limitations you are unable to get native 4k resolution. It's nothing more than upscaled 2, 7k image with digitaly added sharpness :D. What a pitty.
Try and record samples, 2, 7k and 4k, watch them with 200-300% zoom, pause then see the details.
