I worked in 2011 in the plant in Germany which build this car. They planed only about 3000 cars to build, but after everyone gets crazy and the sells get to the roof, they steched the production to 6331 Cars. They couldnt build more, because the tools for the bodyshell were at the end of there life.

Doug is spot on when he says he wishes more car companies made cars like this. The premise now a days seems to be that if you want to have the luxurious interior, options, etc, you need to purchase the higher model, which normally equates to a bigger car.

2012 128i 6MT checking in. I love how "honest" the 1 series is and it delivers pure BMW fun.

It's kinda sad how BMW no longer makes a car with a manual transmission, RWD and a naturally aspirated I6.

I worked in the used car market in South Africa for about 10 years and the BMW 1M is the only car that I ever caved on and bought for myself, I had access to a whole catalogue of performance cars over the years and always had a "Company Car", all it took was one drive of one of these and I was sold...paid 10% above cost (so got it 1000`s of Rands behind book value) and I gave up my company car, drove it and loved it for just over 3 years, she was a thirsty girl but never failed to put a smile on my face when behind the wheel...3am drives around the +- 120km highway "Loop" around Johannesburg in peak summer when I couldn`t sleep still go down as some of the best driving times of my life!

Totally agree Doug. The 1M is an amazing little beast. I got to drive it in Greenville at the ///M Driving School a few years back and the confidence it gave me on the track was amazing. It was light, really agile, and I could throw it around without feel body roll or any tire scrubbing. So, like you, I would love to own one of them.
