Anti-Lag - How Hyundai Eliminates Turbo Lag

How Anti-Lag Works - Ignition Delay ALS Turbo Lag

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N not only crackles, snaps, and pops as you shift through the gears, it's also doing something very useful: keeping the turbocharger spooled up. Yes, the Veloster N, when operating in "N" mode, does in fact have an anti-lag system. The ALS works through ignition delay to ensure the turbo maintains boost when you lift off the throttle. The ignition delay allows for combustion to occur partially within the exhaust manifold, which is why you hear pops from the exhaust.

The hot hatch features a 2.0L turbo with up to 275 horsepower (base 250 HP) and 260 lb-ft of torque. The car features an electronically controlled suspension with various damping settings, and with the performance package you get an electronic limited slip differential, a variable induction system, performance summer tires developed specifically with Hyundai, and of course the anti-lag system! Check out the video for all about how it works!

That is pretty awesome Hyundai is catering to car enthusiasts even at the potential longevity/reliability issues from the antilag.

Marketed as sound enhancer to become legal in numerous countries (only know about Australia as I live here) where antilag is an instant defect notice

Liked for the exhaust animation in the thumbnail and the bang bang noises straight away in the video. Very informative as usual.

Somehow since i've become a car guy, hyundai has gone from the laughingstock of the automotive world to being a respected brand. What a time to be alive.

I am so glad you explained this Jason! A lot of people upload crap to YouTube with misleading titles and descriptions regarding to supposed anti lag sounds from cars which turns out it is usually just some pops from the exaust. Besides, I consider this as a big and necessary step forward in road performance cars, no manufacturer did this before, although it has been used in rally cars since the late 80s... Many people out there saying turbo lag is nice... I can tell none of them have ever felt the difference between antilag activated and deactivated. Jesus Christ... GrA Evo's and Imprezas run damn fast with that thing!!! And they sound wonderful!

Wow! Great information!! No one here in Korea ever brought this up even at Namyang Proving Ground when I was invited to experience the pre production sample back in May. Now I see why this thing always felt like fully spooled up!!

Well it's like they've always said. If you want a production hot hatch with anti-lag you buy a Hyundai.

Basically they watched engineering explained And that’s how they figured out anti-lag

My car has a different anti-lag system, called no-lift shifting (NLS). Basically, when you're at 100% throttle and the engine is revving high enough, you can change gears while holding the throttle pedal down and the ECM will rapidly blip the throttle to maintain engine and turbo speed, so that once you're in the next gear the turbo is already at max boost, thus there is no lag.

M was for people with bucket loads of money. N is for enthusiasts. Hyundai has come up with a wholesome package. My Diesel Hyundai had Variable Geometry Turbo and that was the early stages of Anti Lag turbo system. ThanQ for explaining it so well.

The ALS on my N works VERY WELL, holds boost really well through shifts and it PULLS!

I am so glad I found your channel. You have such a gift for explaining topics in way I (non-engineer) can actually understand. Keep up the great videos mate. Greetings from South Africa.

I'm getting my i30N in a month. I can now talk to people about the turbo in N mode and almost sound like I know something about cars! Thanks.

When I was able to ride and had carbureted motorcycles, we would shut off the ignition, wack the the throttle, and then flip the ignition back on again. This while rolling 30-40 mph in town. When the ignition is turned back on, all the unburned fuel that was hangin out in the exhaust goes boom! rather loudly. The noise on this video brought back memories.

Hyundai going full on driver's car is something we need more of in the industry. Some established marques could really take lessons from them
