Why is this marketed as hackable? How is a x86 PC with a PCIe slot more "hackable" than anything else? It's extendable, if anything.

I want one of these, I just can't afford it. Watching a video on the Zima Board actually got me excited about small form factor mini servers and I bought a used Chromebox, replaced the firmware, installed an SSD, 16gigs of ram and installed Debian / CasaOS on it. I think all in, it cost me about $60.
I'm running PiHole, Home Assistant, a MySQL instance, an image hosting website and Cloudflare Tunnel on it. It's awesome!
One day I will want to snag one of these though.

The only reason to get this appears to be if you really really want to awkwardly plug a PCIe card into it. Otherwise there are cheaper, faster, mini PC's out there. Maybe not quiet as small, but a Beelink S12/EQ12 as an example is easily better value than this.

Wow, a 7 year old processor for $150. So modern and cool. Id much sooner buy a second hand PC. Many more ports and interfaces plus the components can be separately upgraded in the future. And youd probably pay less too

No it’s called a Zima board because it’s made with clearmalt

it looks cool and has nice features, but the CPU is quite an old low performer for x86 arch: the Celeron N3450 and N3350 that they offer are faster than a Raspberry Pi 4 though at 6W TDP. Something to think about at the price of above 120$+

I have two of them. Vastly underpowered, slow and not at all worth the cost. Thought it might be powerful enough to run pfSense, but it was absolutely underwhelming.

I've got one. Had it for a while. It's great to run Linux or BSD but not windows. I ran Windows 10 on it and it's basically unusable - and we all know Windoze slows own with age. Another tell was that the heat fins were super hot to the touch even if Windows desktop is sitting there doing nothing. No so with the Linux desktop install I have. It's a great unit though. I recommend getting all the accessories when you buy it. I just use it as a homelab. I was testing it for digital signage applicatons but I think low-powered ARM SoC's (like a board with Rockchip 3588) running Android are much more suited to the task.

Does the CPU support virtualization? Can I install Proxmox on it?

There a probably hundreds of SBC’s that have PCIe ports on them, on the market

I love how the expansion card needs to have the bracket bent which also blocks the video out port. 0:35 🤣
