i understand why people are pissed at him, but realize this. rumple was abandoned by his father and from the flashbacks, most likely delt with anxiety. than everyone he ever loved let go of him, even his son practically. taking that power isn't about being 'powerful'. it's about being safe. did you not see how he was when he woke up as a regular man? he was scared beyond afraid. that power makes him feel safe and important. AND he can protect the ones he loves. I rather him be the Dark One for all those reason than to see him suffer as he was before. Even if he was a little brave, to be that brave with all that fear is incredibly hard. Take it from someone who deals with anixiety. NOT EVERYONE IS THAT STRONG!! some of us would rather take the easy way out than fight because we honestly believe we will die if we fight.

His going back to being a DO had nothing to do with Belle. That scene with Belle when he sent her away was completely genuine. He legit thought he would never see her again. So yeah, his natural temptation towards power coupled with his feeling of hopelessness without Belle, he gave into choosing the darkness again. Look, people, this is his character, this is the way it goes. It would have seriously gotten boring with him not being a DO AND not having any sort of magic at all. With any show, the writers have to take risks. If you don't like the show, don't watch it. Is it a perfect show? No. It certainly has its shortcomings. But honestly, regardless, so long as Robert Carlyle sticks around, I'm sticking around.

One of the themes in this show whene it comes to redemption is you have to WANT it, and want it for the right reasons. We see that with Regina and Hook. Rumple wants to have his cake and eat it, too. He wants to have power and Belle. Belle has tried season after season to bring out the best in him, and he has betrayed her over and over. He is addicted to power Now he is lying to her again. Belle needs to walk away and stay away, it's not her job to forgive him all the time, she's done that enough
